Taking engine cover off, how do you do it!

Featured Replies

I've asked this before last year but i still can't remove the damn engine cover! I've got a pannel filter by K&N andwanted to install it. Unfortunately no matter how hard i try i simply can't take the bloody engine cover off! It's so tightly on there it seems like it's been glued on! How can i remove it without braking it?

Petrol? Pre facelift?

With difficulty.

The engine cover has four plastic lugs which push fit through metal holed brackets.

The idea is you simply pull straight up as close to each of the lugs as you can get.

They are easy to snap though, especially as they become brittle over time.

Be firm but cautious!

Have a look here. Be careful!

Thanks W8 Performance, that does look indeed tricky. Is it actually even worth me making the effort to fit a pannel filter in there for the sake of a couple of hp? It looks rather difficult to remove! Would it not be better for me to take the car to a Skoda dealer and ask them to fit the pannel filter for me?

Its not actually that hard. It depends how careful you are. The guide makes it easier as it shows the grommets. You can then pull in the right places. Where in Kent are you?

Hey what sort of a communal help site is this ? Nobody can tell an amateur (like me- or many others) how to

remove the engine cover. Jeeez. Have any of you done it ? - then reply and reveal.

Is it a state secret ? Jeeez

Come on !

Eh, did you fail to see the 6 posts above yours?

The engine cover's a clever protective device - it works on the basis that anyone who can't get it off, probably shouldn't be playing with anything that's underneath it anyway! ;)

OK fair enough I see where you're coming from (no disrespect to anyone that posted) I have a vRS TFSI and I have removed it plenty of times without breaking it. Ill not go through every step as already said you can read the guide above. Once everything is disconnected it is held on by four rubber gromits (in the engine cover) that push onto four pegs (on the engine). It doesn't pull off easy, aim to pull either the top or bottom set off first by gripping the engine cover as close to the gromits as you can, don't just pull up you could break it so shake from side to side and pull up at the same time you may have to get tough and shake like a mad man having a fit! It will pop off in the end. Repeat other set of gromits. Some of the gromits may be stuck on the engine pegs that's ok just pull them off (when cold) and re-fit to the cover. Grease the gromits with multi purpose or silicone grease to ensure they come off easier next time. Good luck!
