Calling all Greenline II owners- 18 month report

Featured Replies

My company owned Greenline Combi has now covered 52,000 miles and yet is still only 18 months old.

The 1.6Tdi has loosened up considerably, however, I'm still tempted to get it remapped. The current economy is 65.2 mpg, based on the brim-to-brim method, which, for the size of car is quite an achievement. This compares against 57.6 mpg for my previous Superb, a remapped 1.9Tdi PD.

Reliabilitywise, I have nothing to report. The car has no squeaks or rattles and everything works as it should.

Tyre wear has also been impressive, with the original Conti PremiumContact 2e tyres being replaced last week at 51,259 miles. Funnily enough, whilst I was waiting for a scheduled tyre replacement by Kwik-Fit Mobile, the nearside front tyre was terminally punctured with a large screw. The screw was discovered with the car on my driveway at the end of a 395 mile drive! Needless to say, I fitted the spare (bought at my own expense) as the new tyres weren't scheduled to be fitted for another three days.

The OE rear tyres have been moved to the front axle and themselves, still have 4.5-5mm of tread remaining. At current wear rates, I'd one complete set of new tyres will easily see the car to 125,000 miles and the end of it's four year lease period.

I've looked at the new Octavia, but by the time you add kit which is standard on a Superb SE, there is not much price difference between the two cars. A 2.0 Tdi Octy III Estate would be nice, however, to gain the same spec as my current Superb (including metallic paint) would result in a £1,290 contribution from myself! For a £83 contribution I could have the same spec, but would have to accept the 1.6Tdi engine!

The 60 litres fuel tank is much appreciated as it gives a fairly easily achievable 800 mile range, while my current best is 923.20 miles (72mpg/ 58,26 litres consumed). With the extra 10 litres of the Passat's tank, I'd be able to crack 1,000 miles on one tank of fuel. It is a real shame the Octy III's fuel tank capacity has shrunk by 5 litres, as this effectively reduced the range by 50 to 60 miles.

Having a telecopic bonnet strut is a small detail which makes regular fluid check so much easier. Does the Octy III have a telescopic bonnet strut? My old Octy II didn't, so I expect nothing has changed.

With the standard 16" Spectrum alloy wheels and lowered suspension, the ride is firm, but not overly harsh. The benefit is that there is minimal cornering roll. In addition, the 16" wheels don't look as lost in the wheelwell as in 'S' model which has standard ride height.

The enclosed boot cubbies hold a lot of kit and keeps the bootspace uncluttered. I believe the Passat has open cubbies which are far less practical and commodious.

I'm not convinced the Superb needed a facelift, especially the Estate which has only been on sale in the UK for two or so years. The lack of the distinctive chin in my opinion makes the front less attractive. The changes to the rear are subtle.

Mine is coming up to 15 months old but my mileage is much lower than yours (15,000). Economy is good as is tyre wear. My Climatronic is acting up and sometimes overheats the car for no apparent reason. Other than that, the car has been faultless and rattle-free. Much, much cheaper to run than my previous car (Legacy diesel) and is a more refined cruiser

Im also thinking about a Remap for my newly purchased greenline 2 having come from a Octavia PD140 with shark Remap,

its the low Rev Torque im missing.

Im also thinking about a Remap for my newly purchased greenline 2 having come from a Octavia PD140 with shark Remap,

I've just received a email from Will at Performance Torque advising he is able to remap the 1.6Tdi Superb. The gain is 35bhp and 60 lbs/ft torque which I believe is comparable to a Shark Performance remap. My last Superb was remapped by Will and I had no issues during the 92,000 miles I ran the car.

I agree; the lack of low down torque makes the 1.6Tdi less tractable. In contrast, my remapped 1.9Tdi 105 pulled from 1,000rpm in fourth gear which avoided the need for frequent gear changes.

My Greenline twindoor just passed 8000 miles today. I can't quite match Veloplus mpg as its not yet fully run in, but its averaging 64.7 on the computer. I pulled off of the M25 tonight after a slow but non-stop 60 mile commute from work and it was showing 77.7 mpg for that trip, which was my best ever, and had me shaking my head in amazement me as it is a pretty large car. I can't get anywhere near that out of my new 105ps Fiat diesel. As I have said before, driven properly the Greenline literally steals pound coins out of the back pocket of the chancellor of the exchequer when combined with its £30 road tax.

I am not fully convinced by the ride and handling package on the Greenline. It is good, but there are better and I find it a bit firm and its a tad unpredictable when pushed hard although no scary moments yet. The drivers seat has improved in comfort, but I will never love it as its too narrow although my mods to it have definitely made it better. Nothing has broken or fallen off the car so far and the only noise I have is on the clutch pedal which squeaks a little after about 100 miles of driving. The car is surprisingly quiet, much better than I expected compared to the 18 inch tyred Superb I test drove before buying.

So far so good.

Hi Velo My remapped octavia never missed a beat in the 50,000 I drove after the remap, If you thinking of remapping your greenline maybe we can organise a group buy, im certainly interested.

Mine has done the same a couple of times, but only on SWMBO's side. It blasts out hot air, even if you turn the dial to maximum cold! After I've stopped for a while and restarted, it works correctly again. It happened when I'd not been on a long run for a while after the temperature was on high all the time during the cold weather. Something somewhere seems to get stuck. I've thought about taking it to the dealer to get it sorted, but if it's working correctly when it goes in, I'm certain they'll say there's nothing wrong.

Yes, that's a possibility. Performance Torque are based in Womborne, just south of Wolverhampton; centrally located for most folks.

To gain any meaningful saving, we'd probably need at least a dozen members to sign up to a 1.6Tdi remap.

Velo, I think I may have asked you this before but what does your route consist of? I can achieve similar figures to you but only by doing a constant 65mph and by paying attention to the ecconomy readings. If I just do 70-80 and don't have it displayed on the maxi-dot I find I average about 55. Both of those figures are read from the maxi-dot and not even brim-to-brim.

If I drive to or from the office it is a 44 mile drive on motorways/dual carriageways where I typically drive at around 60mph. The remainder of my driving is a mixture of roads, but still with a bias towards motorways/A-roads.

The maxidot mpg figure is about 10% optimistic. If you deduct 10%, you should be pretty close to the actual mpg.

I'm eleven months and 24k into Greenline II ownership. Commute is 60 miles each way on Motorways and dual-carriageways mostly.

I've found that the ambient air temp has an enormous affect on the mpg. Much more so than other cars I've owned (inc deisels). Through this winter I was struggling to get 55mpg on the maxidot.

But in the last few days, where air temps have suddenly leapt to over 15C, then mpgs have immediately returned to approaching 70mpg for the journey home. That's doing an indicated 70-80 when conditions allow. In the summer, steady driving was giving me nearer 80mpg for the journey home. Winter was no better than 55 for the same driving style.

Has anyone noticed similar?

Now you mention it, I have but I put it down to the Winter tyres I was running being a more grippy compound
