Helicoil or Recoil any experience?

Featured Replies

Just wondeing if any one has any experience of using the kits available? I have seen this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Recoil-Metric-M8-1-25-Thread-Repair-Kit-8mm-NEW-XL-/400324772406?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item5d35374236

and I am wondering whether it will be any good. I don't seem to be able to find any reviews which always makes me sceptical but at that price I am tempted to give it a try compared to the price of a complete hub assembly.

Used Helicoil a couple of times over the years with excellent results. Kits cost a lot more than that one though. Recoil are used in the aerospace industry, so probably pretty good.

Use to use helicoil as a repair method quite a bit when I was i the navy. As far as I remember it was a permanant fix, not just a quick patch up and do it properly later. Never did the work myself, just managed the guys who did.

No idea on the quality of the ebay kit though.

I have used helicoils for many years and in most cases they are better than the original thread, because the insert is stainless steel. You will need the correct size drill and make sure you drill at 90 degrees to the hub.

If done properly the resulting thread is stronger and harder than the original. Kuka industrial robots come from the factory with helicoil style inserts to harden up threads in alloy castings.

I have only done about a dozen helicoil repairs of different sizes and all have been permanent repairs.

So the general consensus is good not bodge if done properly. Thanks for taking your time to reply

Are helicoils suitable where the insert will be subject to heavy load ? OP said it was for use in a hub ! I was always told treat them gently !

It's not the hub itself- so a non rotational part. It's the bolt that holds the caliper to the hub assembly.

Yes.

I've had some good results with helicoils in the past,

I've even had head bolts drilled out and threads helicoiled in my old peugeot MI16 engine when i rebuilt it

I'm still waiting for the kit to turn up before I decide to give it a go depending on the quality.

Well it turned up this morning. Very impressed with the kit. The correct size drill bit, tap, setting tool and a magnetic tool to remove the "tang" when fitted + 15 inserts. Well I have never attempted to fit a heliocoil before but it is remarkably simple and very effective. I simply followed the instructions and it worked. Definitely cheaper than replacing the whole hub assembly and very tight fitting- the bolt torqued up correctly. Thanks for your help guys
