I fear this could be terminal!

Featured Replies

My Octavia a 2001 1.9 TDI has just done the following:

Temperature gauge showing 90 deg

Noticeable loss in power

Over run and red lined even though ignition switched off

My sump is drained of all oil

As I understand it the engine has over-run using engine oil as fuel!

Anyone know why this is likely on this model?

Thanks

Steve

It can happen on any diesel, sounds like turbos failed and engines run on its own oil,

Did it redline and go bang in a big cloud of smoke or just run until it ran out of oil and then stopped

Yup, she's been a runaway! As said, usual case is either build up of oil in the intercooler and pipework or the seals have failed in the turbo and it's basically run itself silly until it ran out of fuel (oil!)

Could be terminal sadly. Time to get the spanners out

I had one do this to me on a MOT smoke test. It broke the turbo shaft and hydro locked the engine. I was lucky we stuck another turbo on it and it survived.

No bang but it did smoke, turbo now seems noisey. Tempted to try a replacement turbo (secondhand) and see where that gets me??

I have also refilled with oil and restarted engine itself sounds much the same just turbo noisey on revving, started to runaway again so I stalled it.

If you fit a replacement turbo remember to drop lower intercooler pipe off and drain oil out of it before starting engine

i once had a ford cargo truck do this to me. The only diesel engine that sounded like a formula 1 car. the manifold & turbo were glowing brightly. Stuck a new turbo on and it was right as rain.
