Problem with oil filter sandwich plate

Featured Replies

Apologies again for another load of asking silly questions. I've got a sandwich plate to fit onto the oil filter housing and this came with 4 adapters. As I am not very good under cars I took this to a local garage to fit. They have told me that there is no room and another adapter needs to be made at a cost of £85.00. I went back to the company that sold me the plate and their response was:

Hi, i think it is a matter of clearance for the oil filter. To overcome this tell your mechanic that if the oil filter to too long then get a suitable shorter oil filter such as one for a Lupo GTI or something similar that has the same thread and rating for flow i think. The service parts shop can help with the technical on this but this is what most people do when the oil filter is too long.

The sandwich plate is taking up an extra 1.5" approx so get an oil filter that is 1.5" shorter with the same thread etc.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, would this solve the issue. I really wouldn't know which oil filter to order!

Thanks in advance

Paul

I take it this is for an extra oil cooler?

If so, then you've (at least IMO) been sold the wrong kit with just a sandwich plate for the takeoff. You need an adapter for a remote filter which will allow you to retain a filter capable of the required flow rate.

Your mechanic is correct, and anyone who suggested fitting a shorter (and hence lower flow) filter, should be taken out and shot!

Not sure on this,but doesn't the golf 1.8t use a shorter filter? : /

Just to give as much info as poss, this is so I can fit an oil pressure and oil temp gauge.

Thanks again for any info folks

Thanks. Seems like I've bought a sandwich plate for nothing! If I used that connector, where woul be the best place to connect the temperature gauge?

Cheers guys,

Paul

I'm not impressed with the speed shop you bought the sandwich plate from, but your local garage seem reasonably switched on; why not ask them where they'd fit a sensor for oil temperature?

Fitting a shorter oil filter is just nuts :(

This will almost certainly change both oil temperature and pressure as the flow will be restricted.

I thought as much myself about the oil filter - surely the filter would be as short as is needed for that engine anyway?!

Looking at a drawing, you can get both sensors on the housing with that adapter. I've been quoted approx. 2 hours labour to fit oil pressure, oil temp and a voltage gauge. Does this seem excessive or about right?

Never fit smaller unit even vag have a superseded oil filter for the 1.8t that holds 0.4l more and its massive lol
