Oil level, levels, level

Featured Replies

Over the last 6 months have been keeping a close eye on my oil level, which in terms of consumption has been pretty good at approx 3-400ml over 3k miles from brand new and seems to have settled down now.

What vexes me most is how sensitive the TSI engine dipstick is to the transverse (left side to right side) level of the car. On my Fabia vRS the PD130 dipstick was roughly on centreline of the vehicle/engine, so road camber and general driveway or car park surfaces were good enough and made little difference as long as there wasn't an obvious gradient front to rear

The 2.0TSI in the Octy has the dipstick on the left side of the engine and depending on which way its parked in the road or on the drive, it can read anything from above max level one way round or near to minimum the other. Our street camber is not so steep but what there is seems to make a big difference. Also the anti surge box profile in the sump probably influences it as well I guess.

Most surfaces in the outside world have some kind of run on them for surface water drainage so in reality are rarely as level as they look. It appears that unless you can park in your garage assuming the floor was levelled when built (last time I got a car in there was about 20 years ago!) or have access to a truly level surface like a workshop floor, its a case of averaging the two readings.

Anyone else find the same??
