Tar & Ferrous contaminants. Remove with red diesel?

Featured Replies

I'm not really one for 'detailing' my car, but one thing I hate is the amount of tar and 'rust' spots my silver Fabia picks up.

I've always found them a nightmare to remove - Not anymore!

This is how i get em' off...

With a 'clean' car I squirt of loads of red diesel all over affected areas and watch the tar run off the paint. Power wash off.

I then use Iron-X for the rusty spots. Repeat if desired. Job done.

I find the iron X to be ineffective on tar unless you use several treatments, which would be expensive. Similarly I find the derv totally ineffective on the rust spots.

Anyone else done this? I guess it would work with white diesel too?

Joe

You would be better using a spirit (petrol/meths etc) to remove the tar spots, rather than an oil, although there are products readily available to do the job in the shops.

White diesel will do exactly the same as red diesel, since it's all made white. The pigment marker is added after the refining process.

Iron X is totally ineffective on tar because its for removing iron/ferrous particles from wheels and paintwork

I use Autosmart Tardis...I would never use diesel fuel due to the oil content

Try WD 40 excellent stuff. Even used it on household carpets to remove tar spots, then used Auto Glym carpet shampoo to clean the area.

John, you're a marvel!! WD40 it is!!

I've had two or three goes with other stuff at the splattering of that yucky stuff they mix with salt but, really, all I've achieved are some well-toned arm muscles. Seeing your post, I went straight out with the can and a (soft!) rag. I only did a small trial area but a dozen close-packed spots almost dropped off. Job for tomorrow!

I owe you a serious pint  !

Thanks for the like and a pint, might have to take a rain cheque on that though. Glad it worked. Its good for chewing gum also.
