New tyre time

Featured Replies

Replacement tyre time for the Fabia Scout 1.6 (105). Is it a straight swop for the originals, Bridgestone Turanza ER300 (205 45 R16 83W ) or should I try some Michelin Pilot Sport 3 XL? All advice welcome.

The originals seem ok, but the Michelins apparently have better reviews for the wet. Most driving is on rural, but fast, roads. Not sure if XL is right though!!!

Personally, yes the Michelin's are generally one of the best, but I'd save some money and look at something like a Uniroyal Rainsport 2, would be great for wet rural roads.

Have you considered an all-season tyre, or do you run a winter set? I can imagine a good all-season, eg Vredestein, would be a great rural tyre, with the added benefit of extra snow performance over a summer.

Thank you for the reply TeebsVRS. Yes, the car presently has winter tyres on and it's now time to switch to summer rubber. I'm not a fan of all-season tyres as I think they're a jack-of-all-trades etc......and would consequently always use winter/summers as the seasons dictate.

I was a bit concerned that the Michelins come as XL and the original Bridgestones aren't, and wondered whether the extra stiffness of the XL would enhanced the steering but at the expense of wet grip.

If XL's are specified, I can only assume its for a reason, so I'll be having XL replacements (even my winter tyres are XL).

Uniroyal Rainsport 2's are good all-rounders and brilliant in the wet, but they don't wear well - mine are down to less than 3mm after 12,000 miles, while the original Bridgestone Turanzas at the rear are still at 4mm after 40,000! Apparently energy-saving tyres have improved hugely in the last few years and I'm considering the new Dunlop BluResponse Sports as replacements for the Uniroyals - few reviews so far but the ones I've seen are very good.

We have factory fitted Dunlop Sport Maxx on the Monte (205/40 R17); been very pleased with them as a summer tyre so far, much better than the Conti Premium Contact 2 fitted to the previous Elegance spec.

Re the XL rating, that should not be to much of an issue, just signifies the tyre has been strengthened and capable of being fitted to heavier vehicles than that size of tyre is normally fitted to. Run winter 99H XL tyres on the Yeti and there's no noticeable difference between them and the 95H summer tyres.

Sorry TP they are utter utter rubbish (Dunlops), well on a Vrs they take ages to warm up. Never again even if there free

Interesting, as I've been finding them a noticeable improvement over the Conti's and Bridgestone's factory fitted to previous Skoda's. Must make these brands utter rubbish to the power of three then :giggle:

Thanks for the heads up though and maybe it is the difference between engines; our Monte is short of a fair few horses compared to a vRS :wonder:

Perhaps a bit hasrh but I don't think there good for the Vrs but maybe ok for the slightly less powered Monte. They seem to take an age to warm up
