Work carried out at service time

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

I know there is thread running regarding service costs, but in the interests of good forum etiquette rather than post further on there I thought it best to start a new thread.

What I would like to know is if one of you bods out there can give information as to what work is carried out at each service stage, say up to 60,000 miles? I guess I'm right in thinking that there is an oil change carried out, but what other work/ consumables are used during this time? When is the cam belt changed? etc.

Before anyone says that it is in the manual, please allow me to point out that I haven't actually taken delivery of my car, so do not have the service book available.

Strangely, what's covered at each service is NOT in the service book. You are advised to consult your Service Partner who "will provide you with information on the service scopes for the respective service events".

No, I didn't believe it, either.

I wonder why they make you jump through hoops to find out? Must be loads if they can't just show it in the book....!

Has anyone had a service? Did they ask what had been carried out? Surely they must be curious as to what they had shelled out for?

I've just done a little digging and found the info below on the Skoda web site. What I would suggest is that it isn't a right lot for £500 quid!! And as it states, this is the MAXIMUM they will do, so you can read it another way and say that if they can do less, they will.

New Car Service Plan

If you're buying a new ŠKODA a fixed price service plan is a straightforward and practical way to care for your car. It only costs £499, and covers all new models for up to 3 years or 30,000 miles*.

If you decide to part with your car, you'll be pleased to know that the plan can also be transferred before the period or mileage has expired.

The service includes a maximum of:

  • 1x Oil change at 10,000 miles or 12 months
  • 1x Inspection service at 20,000 miles or 24 months
  • 1x Oil change at 30,000 miles or 36 months
  • 1x Dust and pollen filter at 36 months
  • 1x Brake fluid change (if required) †

Typically services are done every 10,000 miles or yearly, whichever comes first. Skoda have 3 types of service, minor, intermediate & major. Minor is basically an oil & filter change at 10, 30, 50, 70, 90,000 miles, intermediate - oil & filter, pollen filter at 20, 60, 100,000 miles, major - oil & filter, pollen, air, fuel filters & spark plugs at 40, 80 120,000 miles.

In addition brake fluid changes are every two years, coolant every 5 years and the cam belt at whatever the current interval is. In addition to changing things they'll also inspect the car visually and check for wear in the moving bits of the steering and suspension.

What they won't do is remove the wheels and dismantle and clean the brakes to ensure that they're all nice and free.

With a major service every 40,000 miles, there's a good reason why the service plans only cover up to 30,000 miles.

Drum brake shoes are usually inspected without dismantling. I didn't believe this at first but there are usually inspection plugs on the inner face of the backplate which allow the friction material thickness to be visually assessed. Unless abused by using the handbrake to stop, rear brake shoes can last 100,000 miles. Whether the handbrake mechanism keeps moving freely without attention for that mileage, is another question.

Of course, Skoda will also plug in their computer and read any fault codes. It may be possible to get hold of the necessary software through unofficial channels; I have the BMW equivalent on an old laptop and it is quite useful.
