Just wondering does anybody know if its possible to remove the chrome cover on the gear knob or does the whole part have to come off of the gear stick? mine is getting a little worst for wear was gona take it off and repaint. i know that on the 5 speed octavia the chrome can be removed. any thoughts?

i only ask because i see these replacement parts on ebay...

You can lever it out.

Lever the silver insert up from its bottom edge, but definitely use a plastic trim removal tool (or similar, plastic ruler etc) to avoid damaging the leather.

just bought it thanks, now theres no fear of damaging the old one while i remove it as i have a new replacement!!
