First use of vcds

Featured Replies

OK I've downloaded software (11.11.5) and got the dongle to communicate with usb on my laptop. I've located canbus and I'm ready to go. Question - for the first time scan should I have the engine turned on or just the instrument lights on. I don't want to blow anything. The car is 1.8 tsi dsg.

Thanks

Ignition needs to be on, engine not started.

Car is 4 months out of warranty. At the December 2012 service I asked that the car be put on fixed service instead of variable because I do only 6,000 miles pa. I also got them to check behaviour of dsg because of kangaroo syndrome between 1st and 2nd. They did a software update on the dsg. Otherwise nothing found and MOT passed.

Thanks for links I'll do a bit of googling. I have a feeling I'm going to be one of the unlucky Skoda owners.

Could be an intermittent bad connection. Clear the code and see if it returns.

Done a bit of googling and as you suggested a lot of similar failures on VAGmobiles. Is this something I should raise with dealer/SkodaUK now or wait till next service/MOT in December. If I hadn't been playing with my vcds I'd be none the wiser. Perhaps ignorance is bliss.

I've yet to learn how to clear failure codes. I shall consult Ross Tech web site.

Clearing fault codes is easy - click the Clear Codes button, but read the caution below first.

http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/dtc_screen.html

[Clear Codes - 05] will send a message to the controller asking it to erase the DTCs from its memory. Some faults cannot be cleared (such as internal processor faults) and the control module may explicitly refuse or may just still display the fault after a clearing attempt. Be aware, clicking on Clear Codes does not fix the problem that caused the fault! DTCs should only be erased after correcting the condition(s) that caused them in the first place. Note: There is no way to erase individual DTCs while leaving others alone. This is not a limitation in VCDS. It's just the way the VAG protocols work. Note: In some cases, the ignition must be cycled after clearing codes but before performing certain functions such as Basic Settings.

Thanks for directing me to the dtc screen. The more I delve into all this the more worried I get that I might blow the electronics!

You can cause major problems by incorrect coding (which is why you should always make a note of any existing coding before making changes) but you won't do any damage clearing fault codes. If it was my car I would clear the fault codes and rescan from time to time to see if they come back. If they don't, then it was a transitory problem; and if they do, then there is a problem which needs investigating. In the meantime are you having or have you had any problems with the DSG?

DSG was not smooth at slow speeds forward and reverse, basically it juddered too much for my liking when reversing out of drive. Dealer did a software upgrade and the problem has diminished but not disappeared. There is also whining noise at gear changes at certain speeds when accelerating and decelerating eg slowing down upon entering major roundabout.

Cleared the fault codes and all OK so far. New scan shows no faults.
