My 03 VRS has a speedo issue ie the speedo does not work.

I have done the following -

Replace speedo sensor in gearbox - £30 - no success, still no speedo

Check all wiring from sensor to instrument cluster - took hours, no wiring breaks I can find, still no speedo

I have checked for a signal between gearbox and cluster and cant find anything right or wrong.

This leads me to beleive it is one of two things:

The instrument cluster is broken (its going to BBA Reman next week for testing). If this fixes it, then thats the problem solved.

If not, the only other thing I can think it is is that the pin that drives the speed sensor in the gearbox has gone. This is a gearbox out, strip, replace broken parts and rebuild/refit. I can get the tools to do it, but have never taken on such a task.

I have run out of ideas othner than the cluster / gearbox fault. If its the gearbox, it may well mean the car is broken for parts, as I do not think the costs of replacing it will be worth it on a car worth £2k max, with 120k on the clock.

Any ideas?

Another option would be to drive the speedo gear with an electric drill and see what you get.

If all else fails, you maybe able to pickup a signal from one of the ABS sensors and feed it to a box which converts it into something the speedo can use.

Good call about the drill - you always come up with something. I will try that over the weekend when I get time. It should give me a clue as to if its the box or the clocks at least. If its the clocks, BBA Reman will get them next week, if its not then its a new sensor (again) or the box at fault.

Im going to have to post you a crate of beer or something - its always you who has a solution!!

I am doing everything I can to narrow it down. I shall try the 'drill on the sensor' trick as suggested above. If I get a reading, I know the box is the issue. If I get no reading, I shall get the clocks sent away. That's about as sure as I can be of where the issue lies, as there is wiring signal between the sensor in the box and the clocks, and the sensor has both power and ground. Other than that, I am out of ideas.

Suppose if it is the gearbox and you're happy stripping it you can swap the rivets on the diff for bolts as it quite often fails. Or even fit a lsd lol

Just wondering have you checked for any blown fuses?My speedo wasn't working after it had been to a garage, they're taken a fuse out and had forgot to put it back in.

I've been through every fuse in the car. It's not that. I will be selling the car once it is fixed - need a 7 seater for the 3rd kiddy, so I need this fixed sharpish to get it cleaned up and sold on. I'm trying to spend as little as possible in fixing it, so as to not lose as much as possible.

Does your fuel gauge go up and down when it gets below half a tank of fuel aswell?

broken biscuit has had a drill on the sender and confirmed that the sender/wiring/cluster is OK. There are a few more checks to do but it looks like the speedo gear on the diff has broken.
