Clear coating recommendations

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

just looking for some advice,

I've now gotten quite fond of my Octy after 12 months of joy filled, trouble free, cruising about.

but all the litle clear coat marks on the bumpers that i looked straight passed on buying are really starting to wreck my head.

evertime i wash the car i just go from having a manky dirty auld yoke, to a having a good looking clean car covered in shiny marks.

90% of them are only rub marks in the clear coat, mainly on the bumpers from narrow road hedges.

so, im thinking of just re clear coating them (the bumpers), but is Motip clear laquer any good (Loads of it in local suppliers),

or should i get a different brand?

also thinking of Black Plastidipping my rub strips and grills... probably do the chrome surround too, as that looks good in black :-)

Do you have any photos?

Couldn't they be buffed out?

nope, tried Autoglym paint restorer, and colour matching polish, just made them glint a little better in the sun.

mate had one of the "mantis" pens, and it worked perfectly. all that is though is clear coat in a tippex bottle.

so im thinking just a recoat of clear over the whole lot.

That stuff is all rubbish TBH! a light sand and a polish would probably do it!

To be honest for a proper job sounds like a full repaint.

To be honest for a proper job sounds like a full repaint.

i dont really have the time or money to do that tbh...

i need the car every day for work, so its case of quick fix that reasonably good.

i dont expect it to be perfect, just looking to improve it some bit.

You have a few options, but they will all cost money - depends how much you want to spend but ill start with the cheapest first.

Give it the best clean of your life and use autoglym Resin Polish on the swirls / marks, however its only a filler type effect which means it won't 'correct' the errors just cover them up for the time being and willl need constant reapplication.

Or. Buy some proper clay bar (I Use Bilt Hamber) Clay and machine polish the swirl to the best of your ability (requires skill and patience and lots of research before doing - even then it's wise to have a test panel to practice on)

clay £11

Silverline Polisher £46

Polish £20

But this will actually 'correct the clear coat not just cover it up, but it will cost a bit more than my first suggestion.

Or thirdly you could take it to a professional detailer (not a valeter I stress) and have them sort it out for you, will do 10 x the job you can do but will look amazing.

HTH
