High beam bulb replacement with LED? Anyone did it?

Featured Replies

As the title says... has anyone had his high beam H1 halogen bulb replaced with a LED bulb? I've seen on some websites CANbus LED bulbs, with CREE LED, which looked quite powerfull and I was thinking of trying those. One of the reasons of doing this, will be to have a xenon-like matching color of the high beam. Currently I'm using Osram's Night breaker plus, but is still kind of "yellowish" and would like to have something much closer to the xenon range of color. So... if anyone can help me out with this, will appreciate. Pro's and con's...

P.S. my car is a 2008, pre-FL

Unless you can find one of the super bright cree led's it wont be bright enough by a long shot.

Being led you will need to fit a resistor of some kind but it might be worth while trying without a resistor to see if the bulb out light comes on

I would like to do this as I have Hella bi-xenon projectors and don't even need the high beam halogen bulbs. But the 30w Cree led H1's are like over £30 on eBay which is just to steep especially if they then need resistors on top.

Are you saying you have a 2012 Octavia with bi-xenons? Did you do them yourself? Because my 2012 Octavia doesn't have bi-xenon, it's just on the dipped beam.

I'm interested to find out how you did it, in any case. :)

Yes :-) I did them myself - only octavia I know with it fitted. I used Hella E55 bi xenon projectors and custom made shields to give a sharper cutoff and a lovely blue hue along the cutoff line. Hella are the OEM supplier for Octavia headlamps so replacing them for other Hella projectors was both easier and ensures quality is not sacrificed. They are totally awesome though.

That's a pretty impressive modification. :)

Technically not legal though, is it?

Technically - no. Actually - no lol, but clearer cutoff than OEM projectors just no auto levelling :-(

Another problem with LED is heat dissipation. The headlamps are not designed to cool LEDs, so after a while the LEDs will cook and need replacing. This is why a lot of after market LED sidelights give up after a while. (Said from experience) LEDs still produce heat, just not in the same place that halogens or HID do.

Been there done that. LED sides for a 2 hour drive at night got halfway and bulb warning came on. Pulled over to check and the LED was fried so much it fell off into the light unit. LEDs get very hot and the more SMDs on one you have the hotter it gets.

I have have some led side lights for over two years, still working.

Is it the leds that get hot, or the resistor used to regulate voltage? Two things are likely to destroy a led, heat and overvoltage.

Maybe some day, someone will use pwm instead?

I really not sure but when I removed it the LEDS were to hot to touch. I have LEDS in every other light other the headlights and they are fine. They look way better so I'm tempted to revert.
