What does it means? "Activate / deactivate display mode"

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I interested in very much what does it means "Activate / deactivate display mode" in topic "Overview of the instrument cluster

" In owner's manual here (See button numbered seven)

Do you have someone some informations about it?

Thanks in advance.

If my memory serves me well, this is to show/hide or change whether the second speed indicator shows in the Maxi dot display. By default in the UK it will show as kph as the speedometer only shows mph (there is no second calibration on the speedo like on most other cars). As the law stands in the UK both mph and kph must show, so if this is activated it will always show as kph. There is no functionality to change it to mph unless done using a VCDS. Then you would fail the MOT (if the tester notices it). Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

I think you just need an operating speedo for the MOT which is capable of being read. So I think the kph digital display is simply for convenience, if for example you are in a UK car driving on the continent.

Hi, not wishing to be pedantic or labour the point but I found this on the UK government web site

Speedometers

35.—(1) Save as provided in paragraphs (2) and (3), every motor vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer which, if the vehicle is first used on or after 1st April 1984, shall be capable of indicating speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour, either simultaneously or, by the operation of a switch, separately.

(2) Paragraph (1) does not apply to—

(a)a vehicle having a maximum speed not exceeding 25 mph;

(b)a vehicle which it is at all times unlawful to drive at more than 25 mph;

©an agricultural motor vehicle which is not driven at more than 20 mph;

(d)a motor cycle first used before 1st April 1984 the engine of which has a cylinder capacity not exceeding 100 cc;

(e)an invalid carriage first used before 1st April 1984;

(f)a works truck first used before 1st April 1984;

(g)a vehicle first used before 1st October 1937; or

(h)a vehicle equipped with recording equipment marked with a marking designated as an approval mark by regulation 5 of the Approval Marks Regulations and shown at item 3 in Schedule 4 to those Regulations (whether or not the vehicle is required to be equipped with that equipment) and which, as regards the visual indications given by that equipment of the speed of the vehicle, complies with the requirements relating to the said indications and installations specified in the Community Recording Equipment Regulation.

I also looked at the EU regulation - directive 75/443/EEC and that states:

4.2.2. In the case of a speedometer manufactured for sale in any Member State where imperial units of measurement are used, and where transitional arrangements in accordance with Article 5 are in force, the speedometer shall be marked both in km/h and in mph (miles per hour) ; the graduations shall be of 1, 2, 5 or 10 km/h and also of 1, 2, 5 or 10 mph and the values of the speed indicated on the dial shall be multiples of 20 km/h and multiples of 20 mph.

What a boring person I must be at a dinner party!

Note to self: don't invite Zee for dinner.

It's a legal requirement to have a speedo reading mph and kph, but not an MOT requirement. The two things aren't the same.

I stand corrected. BTW, I promise not to speak about legal issues when you invite me to dinner. My wife would slap me down anyway.

Hello

Thank you of your relies!

This maybe what you meant? but it is not a requirement to have both speeds displayed at the same time, however it must be capable of displaying both.

Yes, I believe the law mandates that the intrument be only capable of showing kph, not that it must do so all the time.

Also, Zee is the closest person to James May I've seen, and I've only been on this forum for 2 days :-D

You need people like me to show you how normal you are.

It certainly shouldn't have been an offense, I love the guy. And no, you don't have to show me how normal I am. I have a typewriter, and I use it. Because I want.
