Problem with vibration/rumble when braking

Featured Replies

I seem to have a problem with my second car (Mk2 Mondeo), where I am getting a vibration/rumbling when braking, particularly on a downhill road. It seems to be from the front o/s, and is not present in any form just driving along at up to mororway speeds.

I have had the wheels off, and the wheels revolve nicely, no noise, but when I remove the wheels and turn the hubs/discs by hand, the o/s wheel does seem to stick slightly at one point.

Is this more than likely a warped disc, because I think the bearings feel OK, and as I said, the problem only happens when braking.

Cheers.

Doubtful it's a warped disk that's not actually all that common. More likely you have deposits on the disk from the brake pad. If you spin the wheel do you see markings that roughly match the size of the pad?

I get this occasionally and it helps of you take the car out and do some aggressive highly antisocial braking. 70-10mph hard and repeatedly.

If the disk is genuinely warped you've probably got a problem with the caliper and the above would have no effect.

Cheers, I will give that a go tomorrow, on a quiet road, and see if it cures things.

I had that problem with my previous Octavia. It was pitting and corrosion on the rear faces of the front discs, possibly because I used the brakes lightly. Braking improved significantly when I changed the discs.

I took it out again yesterday and tried some pretty heavy braking on a quiet road, not just slamming the brakes on, but also progressive hard braking, including downhill stretches.

The vibration/rumble is still there, and looking at the handbook (I keep notes of various parts I have changed in the back), I changed the front discs about 40K miles ago.

I think that I will take advantage of ECP's 25% sale and out some new discs and pads in.
