Bolero to Amundsen RNS 310 GPS. Is it a DIY job? 2010 2.0 tdi L&K

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm considering buying an Amundsen to replace the Bolero. Is it an easy job to do yourself and will I need anything more than the new unit itself? Thanks in advnce for suggestions!

Should be more or less plug and play, you'll need a GPS antenna (can sit with the unit in the dash), possible it may need some coding to work with maxidot if you have it.

.....also worth noting the Amundsen + RNS 315 is considerably better than the normal 310 if you can get one. Built in BT and DAB if you get the right one. Columbus units also now more available and affordable than they once were.

The radio shape is different, so you'll also need a new facia surround. The surround can be purchased from your local Skoda dealer.

Good point that too

Won't you need a special dab aerial?

Thanks for the advice and info. I happened to take my polo up to a radio place today to sort out the cd player and the guy knew al about the systems in skodas, he even had one for sale if i wanted it, but he said that swapping it with the bolero just to get the sat nav was a waste of money because the sat nav on my smart phone was much better. He said the sat nav built in would run slowly if using other functions for music nd said not to bother so I'll see how it all works when i get the car before i start swapping it around!

Oh, he also said he could fit a DAB for £70 but i didn't ask if it ws integrated into the unit already in the car.

The sat nav on your phone etc may be better, more upgradabale etc, however, with a built in unit they just look so much better, I changed from a Bolero to the Columbus and its fantastic, the maps have never let me down so far, everywhere I have needed to guided to it has found, no major issues at all, a great upgrade if you go for it, no real experience of the Amundsen but for the difference in cost between them on ebay I would certainly get the Columbus unless you are fussed about DAB and manage to find one with it already built in. Whatever you decide it will be a good upgrade I am sure.

ok, cool, thank you!

Oh its also worth noting that some of the units have a different shape front panel depending on what car the unit was destined for. For example a Superb Bolero I believe is a different shape to that of an Octavias. Not sure if the afflicts the Amundsens or Columbus' s too.

My 2 pence worth i'd genuinely say the Amundsen + is probably the best bang for buck unit available for these cars. If your motor is fairly basic you can pretty much also get BT and DAB in one hit, the BT requires a OEM mic and the DAB would require a 3rd party antenna, also the nav capabilities on the Amundsen are pretty much identical to the Columbus and debateably it probably also has a better user interface.

One other bonus........whilst the Columbus has a HDD which are inherrently prone to failure and can slow the system down when demand for data from the disc is high (i.e playing music from HDD whilst navigating) the Amundsen + has 4GB built in flash memory for all the mapping data, which is debateably more reliable and quicker to access.

Only problem is the Amundsen + is compared to the Columbus still relatively new so finding one on fleabay etc may prove more tricky....new from Skoda they are about £1200.....ouch!

Thanks for that. What seemed a relatively simple issue is actually quite complicated. I think tht I will just carry on as I am and just keep a lazy eye open. At least the technology only gets cheaper the longer that you wait!

I would like to replace my Bolero on my FL Scout for an Amundsen + as well.

Are all Amundsen+ units DAB?

So as far as this thread goes, its just replace the surrounding trim, and add a DAB aerial and a GPS aerial for the sat nav, that doesn't sound too bad!  Any VCDS programming needed? Will the parking sensors graphical display still work?
