evening guys does anyone know the size of the nut that holds the hub bearing in please on the front

I've just changed mine (04 reg) and they were as tiamaria stated, however, I have seen posts and guides which suggested that earlier models had smaller nuts.

Whereabouts in Wales are you? I'm near Mold, so if convenient then you're welcome to borrow mine and new torque wrench rather than buying something you hope never to use again.
