Climate/aircon

Featured Replies

With this warm weather we been having, I have been trying to use the aircon bit on my climate control

I said trying because it isnt, its not cooling properly, im only getting ambient temprature blowing out

does anyone know of any problems with the climate control/aircon on the Octavia ?

Car is booked in Horners on Weds to be looked at

thanks

mines working fine.did notice when i had all positions on there was less power so just used 1 i needed at the time

Seems there are 2 possible problems - You could either have a broken compressor (normally acompanied by a burning smell) or it may just need a re-gas.

Hope you get it sorted

Rich

I bet the clutch as failed on the compressor myself.

Mine is blowing out cold air but its not cooling the whole car down. My 7 month old is still roasting over the back even with the system on full blast for 15 minutes, the blowers only seem to make a difference only if they are blowing directly on you. The air is 'cool' but could be colder in my opinion and this is after a re-gas and check by the dealership.

Is there a certain combination of the controls that gets it working best?

I have got the temp on lo, all 4 dash vents open and the power on full blast. Tried turning it down to only 3 or 4 bars but still didn't cool the whole car :(

Is the air con system better than climate control or is climate control supposed to be the best? I am getting very frustrated with it not cooling the whole car as it defeats the object of having it, my parents have air con in both their cars and it cools the whole car down in a matter of minutes. The Skoda system just doesn't seem to do what its supposed to do.

If you don't use the air con system often the system will detoriate in performance, and eventually produce zero effect.

Have you tried using the air re-circulate button on the climate control. This takes air from inside the car and cools it before blowing it back into the car. when its very hot outside it does help cool the car.

And put it on lower floor setting, this should direct air through the floor vents.

Perhaps the same that mine is suffering on too ...

They had to refill a lot of cooling fluid during the last inspection.

The Techie told me to look after the cooling performance during the

next weeks .

Possibly a leak in the system.. and there might be one

The performance is getting more weak day by day..

So I have to get ict checked next week ... I feel my wallet start

itching

Just got mine back from garage yesterday, tehy have told me they have to order parts for it, apparently the clutch is at fault and it will take them 3 days to get one

The weid thing with mine is that while we were going along it didn't seem to cool the whole car, but then when the car was parked up for 5-10 minutes with the engine running the car cooled down massively.

Why would it work really well while the car is stationary but not cool the car when moving?

Presumably not getting any more ambient air in by forced draught? Also, have you checked the setting for recirculating as previously mentioned? Mine is in need of a regas but if I set it to recirculate it works well, I get out of the car with cold arms!

personally i just leave mine on auto and lower the temperature on hoter days, works for me :)

I just leave mine on Auto all the time, hardly notice any difference in performance or economy.

The Octavia's aircon is far better than the Ford and Alfa systems I've had before although not quite up to the freezer that was fitted to my old Rover 75.

In the recent hot weather I find leaving the temp at 18 degrees and switching the recirculating air on will have the whole car cool within a few miles and the climate control will then start to turn the blower down itself. If the outside temp is pretty cool i'll then switch it back to fresh air.

On the Rover 75 the Dual Zone climate would automatically choose the recirc function depending on internal and external temperatures, the car would have you knocking the climate up a few degrees within a couple of miles as you would be too cold. Even in hot weather you couldn't have the vents blowing on you for long as they were too cold.

Shame they went bust really but I suspect the 75's climate system was BMW sourced.

When people say that the joints dry out if you don't use your aircon, say over the winter, what does that actually mean? Also if the dealer does a re-gas are the joints something they replace?

don't know a lot about air conditioning systems...can you tell....

I believe (and I'm sure someone will correct me) that during the regas they inject a lubricant which is circulated with the gas. Not running the system means that the lubricant won't be circulated and do its job. The dealer won't replace joints as a matter of course, but if the system is leaking after the regas, then they may need to replace them (at your cost, I'd imagine) :D

It's probably easier if you think of them as rubber seals, the aircon fluid also contains a lubricant that keeps the seals moist and slippery, the lubricant also prolongs the life of the compressor.

If you don't run the aircon for long periods the rubber seals shrink and crack and gas will escape.

It may be enough for the system to be repressurised and run up, the seals may hold OK. If there is still a leak in the system then they will have to be replaced.

The compressor is sat under your bonnet which is a very harsh enviroment, long peroids of inactivity will cause seals to go and components to sieze.

Just leaving it on Auto is the best policy, if not run it at least once a week for one long journey.

Ive noticed that although mine is working effectively, its pretty smelly when you turn it on. With recirculate selected the smell goes so is it fair to assume that the pollen filter might need a change, its a damp sort of smell which is worse with econ selected

Thanks

PS noticed some stuff in Halfords the other day which is a little can which supposedly refreshes the system, its just an aerosol so it begs the question where does it go
