Hi,

I've been searching posts on here for a while trying to get to the bottom of my ABS fault with my 02 plate 1.4l Fabia. I'm having a little trouble with the auto-scan on vag-com but I managed to get the following readings:

I spent £500 on repairs about a month or two back and I've insured it up until Feb 2014 so I'm desperate to keep it on the road but not have to spend much more but from what I've read this indicates that my abs control unit needs replaced. Is there anything I can check before I put my car in the hands of a mechanic? I checked the 40A fuse in position 6 above the battery as there were a lot of posts about that but it looks fine.

NB: the engine management light used to come on frequently and was on solid before repairs, went away then came back intermittently. My main concern is the ABS but that presumably explains the other error codes.

Thanks in advance

Is the battery the original one?

Thanks for the reply. It was replaced about 2 years ago.

This isn't the problem that happen with Golfs about 4 years ago? Where the abs light kept coming on it was something to do with the abs pump? It happened on my Touran luckly was sorted under it's warranty, outside of warranty it's a £1500 fix? Maybe I'm mixing it with another problem.

From the VIN it's a 2002 Classic 1.4 MPI 68hp.

Do you have any faults listed under 17 Instruments?

You could have a problem with CAN-bus causing the ABS and immo problems.

You could also have a power problem?

What work did you have done a couple of months ago?

I just scanned "17 - Instruments" and got no codes. I did manage to get the auto-scan done up to address 46 I got this on address 09 and no other error codes.

1 Fault Found:

01598 - Drive Battery Voltage

07-10 - Signal too Low - Intermittent

When you say I could have a power problem do you mean battery type power or horse type power? If the latter the engine management light usually comes with a short lack of power before stuttering back to normal.

I should take this opportunity to admit to my complete ignorance about cars. I put the car in because it was making a lot of noise at motorway speed and he replaced the bearing that was causing that. It also got 2 new tyres and there was some axle work but I'm not sure what exactly. Spark plugs changed, filters cleaned. He's written on the invoice "front suspension arm bushes slight wear" (I think, not the world's best hand writing). It also had a quick repair a week later as a bolt came loose as a result of the heat caused by the bearing issue. I don't know if any of that would be relevant?

The following codes seem to be caused by a CAN-bus problem. Now it could be the ABS controller is the problem,

but my gut feeling is that you have a wiring problem.

17978 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer

18057 - Powertrain Data Bus: Missing Message from ABS Controller

65535 - Internal Control Module Memory Error

65535 - Internal Control Module Memory Error

The following code could be a problem with the spark plug or the HT lead to it

16686 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected

The following two codes could be failing sensors. Both are common faults. Or they could be wiring related, due to water ingress or caused by electrical power problems.

16500 - Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor (G62)

16726 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40)

Clear all the codes and see what comes back - it could be the misfire was logged before the plugs were changed.

Remove the scuttle panels and check the plenum chamber is dry.

Hi there,

This isn`t exactly a reply as such, but my questions about ABS. So I`m not sure if this is the correct forum anyway.

Vehicle: 2002 Octavia 2.0L petrol hatchback.

Problem: ABS light on continuously.

M.O.T due soon. Have, some time ago, cleaned out the slots on the wheel sensors, to no avail. So, am going to check out the electrical contacts around there and fuses etc. I`ve got a VAG code reader coming in the post by the way, which I`ve no doubt I`ll need!  If I have no luck however, some forums etc. on the net suggest  that the ABS pump unit could be at fault, if so, where is it located? and, does it have to be reprogrammed in if a replacement unit has to be fitted? I welcome any suggestions that any might be of help. Thanks, ladies and gents.
