Engine Undertray

Featured Replies

What is the purpose of the engine undertray?

to protect the sump a bit

To protect the sump, period. Thankfully, most higher-end fabias come with very good protection underneath.

I guess Skoda new us young people were gonna be doing stuff to it

i dunno the plastic one on the vrs isnt great

It is just a flappy bit of plastic, so if anything is going to take out the sump, its gonna laugh at the little plastic undertray and rip it right off. :D

Is is seriously to protect the sump? I wondered if it could be to reduce air swirl in the engine bay and reduce noise or something?

So... if it has fallen off, is it not really worth replacing?

Jamie

Its for sound proofing; it reduces the amount of engine noise being reflected off the road surface back to the cabin floor. It probably contributes to undercar aerodynamics as well.

Can anyone vouch for how well it works?

Also helps keep road dirt out of the engine bay: you should have seen the state of mine after it came off....

A plastic tray protect the sump? Give over.

If you look at the design its for noise reduction.

Not noticed any additional dirt on the underside of the engine or any difference in noise since mine came off (undertray is hardly dirty at all and currently sat in my living room! ;)). I believe it needs to come off if you're fitting a lower front strut brace anyway :D

So - let's take this one a little further along as my eyes already hurt

If you were to use the metal undertray bits that you can order, would you loose some of the sound proofing, or would that get better?

Guessing the metal one would be a lot better for protection of the sump though :)

Chris - do you still have the undertray? I thought I had to buy a new one...

The design? If you remove the tray you can see how it just fits correctly right there, following the undershape of the engine.

It's not for noise reduction. Noise reduction material is different and it certainly cannot be plastic, low frequencies would go thru it and high frequencies would just bounce back, and I highly doubt there are any audible high frequencies coming out from underneath.

I do still have it, but I believe some or all of the rear mount points have split which is why the rear of it fell off the car, so it probably won't stay on. You're welcome to take it off my hands if you want it though...... :D

Chris

The undertray is great at keeping the road dirt away from the engine bay.

And at keeping oil away from your driveway as the car gets old.

And a real pain in the ... at oil changes.

It's also a handy sled when it snows :P

I was having a think about that, but I am probably working.

..the plastic undertray on the octy is out of consideration to people following you down the road..it's real purpose is ..........

to catch the bits of broken-off sump, 4.5ltrs of oil and if you were travelling really fast when you met the speed bump, the bits of big-end and con rods...
