Key unlock settings -- different for each key?

Featured Replies

I've just had to get a new key. Before I lost mine, my key would unlock all the doors simultaneously, whereas my wife's would have to be "double-clicked", once to open the driver's door, twice to unlock all the doors. My wife took the car to DM Keith's to pick up the new key for me, and asked them to set up the keys so they BOTH opened all the doors at a single press.

When they'd finished, HER key was set up correctly, but mine was working as hers did originally: only unlocking the driver's door. She asked them to fix it, and after umming and ah-ing for a while, they said something about it being because my key "was on a different frequency" and needing to order another new one. She had to leave for another appointment at this point, so came home with both keys.

Anyway, thanks to previous posters on this board, I went into the Maxidot and messed with the convenience -- unlock -- manual settings, and set it to "unlock all doors", which seems to have done the trick, and both keys now work as expected.

What I'm wondering is how the two keys, both originally and the new ones after setup, managed to have different settings. Is the unlock behaviour I've set on the Maxidot global? In which case, how did the two keys end up behaving differently? Or do the Maxidot settings you see only apply for a specific key used to unlock the car, or for the key in the ignition when the setting is made?

It would be pretty cool if the individual keys allow you to "personalise" all the car settings when you open it, not just the seat and mirror positions, but I sort of doubt it's THAT clever...

Yes each Key is set separately for a variety of functions such as unlock.

And it can be disabled with VCDS, something like "personalisation enabled" in the central electronics controller long coding.

Is that done as I've suggested (ie "personal" settings apply just to the key in the ignition at the time of setting) or is there some special procedure needed to "pair" each key with a specific set of settings?

Personal settings using Maxidot apply just to the key in the ignition at the time of setting. Other personalised things include climatronic settings (based on the settings last used with that key).

It's brilliant after SWMBO drives using her key, when I get in using mine the only thing I need to alter is the interior mirror. Which believe it or not irritates me a:-)
