Driving a 4x4 in the olden days.

You had to keep all wheels on the ground at all times, you had to watertight the clutch housing before going through water, slacken the fan belt... And those low and high range levers really didn't make things easy either.

Oh now I know how easy the Haldex system makes doing the same in a Yeti!

It needs the "pearl and dean" adverts for the local carpet shop and tandori over the intro to each one.

Is that Graham driving the first one?

 Having used a long wheel base years ago for carrying 300 gallons of water and chemicals to a sprayer in the fields the red low range 4 wheel drive lever was the most used one, keeping 2 wheels on the ground was a bit of a challenge at times, and you had to keep shutting the rear sliding window that would never latch properly or the water and chemicals from the ill fitting lid on the tank would go down your neck, :giggle: Those where the days. Thank god for the yeti only one gear stick,

You've obviously not been around recently - blame MarieK!

ps, be careful, we're in danger of straying off topic and I'll be in trouble again. At least there's no innuendo ... but I like it too

No Bob. My "proper" LR was a Series 3 Long Wheel Base Station Wagon, but I fondly remember the fun we had with it.

I must scan my photos of my trialling it.

Wakey wakey!!

I still hanker after a series 2a again.

Great fun.

I had a series 2a LWB Safari; on on the annual holiday run from the south coast to Scotland, the speedometer needle began jumping around.

I removed the cable from the speedo head, filed a few mm off the cable boss and refitted it. I sometimes wish that we could return to those days of being able to mend our own vehicles: then I remembered how removing the diff nearly broke a rib and think perhaps not!

^ Half-shafts, yes, but I seem to remember that these were frequent casualties :whew: - but our only diff failure had to be dealt with mid-journey by a local garage .

Great.That brought back fond memories.

The builders I first worked for had a 1948 series 1.

The Commentator didn't say "Woman know your place" once.

(Apologies to Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse.) :giggle:
