Knocking noise...

Featured Replies

Just wanting some other suggestions to what you think the noise on my car might be...

It's quite a loud knock and happens very often, mostly when on and off the throttle and when lock is on either way (possibly more loud when turning left)

The noise has been on the car for about 10 month now but only the past week I've noticed it more often and louder!

I've had the car on the ramp this afternoon for five minutes and have checked:

Track rod ends

Ball joints

Drop links - changed not long ago

Console bushes - changed not long ago

Anti-roll bar/bushes

Driveshafts

Wheel bearings

Springs - noticed one side has a different spring that's catching but not the cause.

Strut top bearings seem ok, nice and smooth to turn the wheel from lock to lock by hand when on the ramp but hard to check otherwise? (Suggestions how to check?

The car is silent in a straight line and can't hear anything over speed bumps, but.. If dropping off a curb at very low speed with lock to the left its very loud and clear.

I think I can rule out dogbone/kick mount as well as other engine mounts as if you park up with the handbrake on tight and jerk the clutch up fast to kick the engine it's silent!

something heavy in the boot / glove box ? lol

is the car lowered ? something could be catching when the suspension is compressed ? i had that on a 206 drop link was catching inner wing ....

Cars all standard really, 100% nothing in glovebox or boot. It sounds like somthing more serious like a subframe bolt loose etc..

If you heard how loud the knock is you would think it would be really obvious to see but the car looks solid under it.

One thing I haven't checked is how tight the driveshaft bolts are... But even that's a long shot!

Very annoying as I want to sell the car soon and would rather fix it for the new owner rather than say nothing...

if your selling the car just turn the radio up ....

just a though .... the plastic stops are still on the roll bar arent they?? its not sliding side to side hitting the subframe like it does on the fabia ?

Or to put it another way, what age is the car, if it is older than "55" it could have left the factory with the old style ARB which had plastic end stops and a "thicker" (plastic sleeve or plastic end stop tail) section of ARB at the mounting clamp points, as opposed to the newer ARB which had metal end stops welded onto the ARB - so the bar will be the same thickness through out its length.

It's a 2007 model with 76k on the clock.

I'm thinking a shocker might be fooked maybe? But don't think it would knock as bad as it does.

I've checked the antiroll bar with a pry bar checking for side to side play and up and down play with the drop links, it's all solid. :(

£4,000 if anyone wants it anyway haha

You checked the bonnet catch ?

I have actually, had a check round the engine bay while having a visual inspection of the engine mounts.

I've sort of settled with steering rack but can't make my mind up!

If your parked up with the engine on and rock the steering do you get a slight knock from it?
