Slightly Lumpy when Cold

Featured Replies

Hi Guys - had my VRS for 4 weeks now and can't really put into words how much I love the car - it really has exceeded all of my expectation.

Everything is perfect other than the engine being slightly lumpy when cold. It only does it for the first 60 seconds or so, and only between say 1200 and 1800 rpm.

Does anyone have any idea what it may be?

Thanks

Carl.

Engine is still warming up - most engines run a little lumpy when they're not at operating temperature yet.

Thanks for the reply.

I thought exactly the same, but my mate has a cupra turbo - same engine, and another friend has the 180 bhp Audi TT - again same lump, and neither have this problem whatsoever. Both other cars are a smooth as silk from the turn of the ignition key.

Its not quite as bad, but I'd describe it the same as when my mk1 escort mexico with cam and forties was running from cold. Best word would be hesitant I suppose.

Is it a newer car? Not sure when it was added but my 05 vRS has some kind of device to reduce emissions at idle and this makes it lumpy and hunt a bit especially when cold. Same thing happens to a friend that owns a Leon Cupra R.

Not really - 02 plate.

Leak from the turbo hoses? See my post on fault codes.

Min has this and always has done. There is a simple cure.

As you drive off give it a small bit of welly so you hear the turbo start whistling, then change into 2nd and drive as normal. It seems that one the turbo has had a spin the lumps disappear.

Strange that it doesn't spin up sufficiently to start with, but as long as it works :D

Dunno if first gear is much use other than for the initial blip to get the car moving, 2nd for accelerating is going to be a lot nicer anyway :)

Yea mine does the same and I agree with Goochie for the cure / work around.

One other thing that seemed to helped out with the lumpy start was I stopped blipping the throttle as I turned the key (force of habit after driving old bangers for too many years).

If you run the car with the window open you can really hear the bumpiness until the turbo has spooled up for the first time. It works all thetime though.

Think there was a recent thread on the subject, as far as i remember it is common to all octy vrs's, just one of those things, must say mine sounds great goin under railway bridge outside my house in the mornings, sounds more like WRC octy than vrs!

Yeah, I have the exact same problem with mine, If I turn up the hill (out of my drive) its lumpy for about 2 minutes and I keep the revs low until it warms up, if I turn and go down the hill its fine.

I assume its nothing to worry about, but my previous cars didn't do that.......

Its something to do with the T on 1.8T actually meaning Tractor ;)

No, seriosuly, its because the oil drains off the lifters and it takes a while for it to recirculate.

I assume that your'e giving the car a bit of an idle before moving off like any turbocharged car? This just gives the oil enough time to get to a more usable temperature before you start spinning the turbo up under load. Everything else gets a chance to settle down before moving off which may well avoid your lumpyness.

In the same way for different reasons (avoiding heatsink into the oil from the red hot turbo bearings) your'e well advised to let the car idle for a minute or so before you turn off.

Also, blipping the throttle isnt required on modern fuel injected cars and many believe it can cause starting/initial idle problems.

I havent noticed anything out of the ordinary with mine but Ill keep an ear out.
