Auto dimming rear view mirror

Featured Replies

This has frustrated me for a while.

I've a 2011 Scout, with auto-dimming rear view mirror. The button on the bottom is selected in, the LED is lit, and the rear view mirror and the drivers wing mirror do dim, with a greenish tint.

However, it doesn't react very quickly. And when I say not quickly I mean it takes a few seconds to dim. I can place my finger over the sensor on the front (forward facing) face of the mirror to 'fool' the system into thinking it is dark and there are headlights behind me (ie no light in front, but light behind) and the dimming starts, but nowhere near quick enough to stop dazzling. I haven't timed it but estimate 5-10 seconds to fully darken.

I still have to tilt the mirror at night sometimes as I do get dazzled (in fact it happened again last night which reminded me to post on here).

As fas as I'm concerned a manually adjustable mirror would be much better as it would be instant, or at least as quick as it took me to 'flip' the mirror.

Question - is this what happens to everyone else or does your mirror dim more quickly?

Cheers :)

Edit: to correct a typo.

I never have this problem with my auto dimming mirrors. If anything mine dims too quickly!

My mirrors seem to dim progressively as headlights approach from behind, and by the time a car is right up behind me the mirrors have long since fully dimmed.

Do you have a strong tint on your rear window?

I have a 2012 TSI and the mirror has worked so well I have forgotten the old days of manual mirror dip. Suspect there is a real issue with yours and that warranty could be investigated. Good luck.

I never thought about tinted windows, good call. I have what came as standard, which in the Scout was privacy glass (think that was what they called it) from the B-pillar back. It is darker than normal but nowhere near some after market tinting i've seen.

Thanks, I can feel a call to the local dealership coming on before the warranty is up.

In that case, it probably has a bit of an affect on the operation of the auto dimming mirrors. One thing that has always struck me about auto dimming mirrors is how sensitive the rear facing light detector must me.

In VCDS there is an option to adjust the sensitivity of the front light/rain sensor to account for different front windscreen tints.....I wonder if there is a similar adjustment for the auto dimming mirror sensor. I'll have a look when I get a chance.

As you say, speaking to the dealer is probably your best bet as you still have warranty.

As it's a Bank Holiday weekend I e-mailed the dealer with my concerns/observations. If I hear anything positive from them I'll post it here in case anyone else is interested.

It's called Sunset Glass, and I've never noticed a problem with mine doing that. Don't use it much, but it's fairly progressive.

Car may have aftermarket tints and not sunset glass? If too dark would probably affect the sensitivity of the mirror.
