The car The hinge curves in side and pivoits of two knobberly bits where's the spring fit? Any pics would be great. Many thanks :hi:

As you open the flap next to the cap you will find a rubber gromit to your left. This is just a gaiter and the spring is inside it. When you press on the closed flap this is what pushes it open. If yours has a lockable fuel flap( not cap) then a bar slides out from the left and goes into the hoop of the flap .then to lock it.open the flap then lock your you should see the bar slide out from.If it does then it is working. Now unlock the car and close again the flap then lock the car it should not open when you press it. Does your car lock itself after you drive off. If not just use the lock button inside the car and it will not pop open in car wash .IIt is opening because the rollers on the car wash press on the flap and it opens , cannot show pictures as I no longer have my Vrs

The left hand spring loaded rubber gromit just governs how far the flap spring can push the flap closed. It is hard to see on the Octavia maybe yours is missing ill try and take a pic with my phone at an an angle later, it's mounted on the hinge itself you have to take the flap out to get to it which isn't hard to to..(long story I learned this the hard way) once it's wide open hold and push towards the back of the car and it'll pop out with the spring attatched. You can't buy the spring seperate you may get one from a scrap yard though...you could always just lock the doors while you're in the car wash, it'll be held closed by the shoot bolt.

No the spring is what opens it when you push it , if there was no spring it would not open unless you prise it open, if in winter and the spring has water in it and frozen solid you will see

yes that spring pushes the spring loaded flap enough to get a hold of but the hinge spring is what holds the flap closed, without it the flap would just be flapping around.

The question was 'Does anybody know what holds the flap closed' not open.

Never had a hinge spring on mine and had from new 56 plate , must have had a revision. Like I said mine always locked when on the move so cannot be open, and as I am a amateur detailer never taken through a car wash
