Superb estate as next car?

Featured Replies

Hello all, new to the forum.

I'm shopping to replace my knackered Honda Accord estate and currently top of the list is a Superb. Got my eye on an Elegance spec with the 170 engine. Couple of things though - is there really much to gain over an Octavia, and does the 170 engine really pack that much more of a punch than the 140? They do seem to be very good value for money with about £18-£19k getting an 18 month old with about 20,000 on the clock.

It will need to tow a trailer with rally car a few times a year, and will need to survive the potholed roads of the west of Scotland, and 30,000 miles per year. 4WD not needed as I've never needed it to date with winter tyres on.

Well hello there i too am from the west of scotland, the space in the superb has more room in the back than a Merc S Class, it is the 2nd biggest car in the back in the VAG range the car beating it is the Audi A8 LWB, i have the 1.6 TDI 105 and it has plenty of power to hall it about, as for towing i would advise the 170 just to be on the safe side, you will NOT regret getting a superb and feel stupid you didn't get one sooner, it is the best car i have owned to date (i have had plenty) and it will take something special to beat it

+1

Mine is 4wd, only 'cos it was the only used L&K estate around at the time. I love the DSG but I reckon it's a bit sluggish from 50-80 as its a 140. Certainly feels slower than my previous 150 Bhp slush box Saab estate.

Brilliant car though - get one particularly a 170.

PS just got back from Greece - those E Class taxis are cramped :-)

The superb is much more refined than the Octavia (i.e. quieter both engine and road noise) and I even though I have a 170 I'd suggest that the 2.0 140bhp diesel is likely to be a better all round motor for your needs. I drive our 140 Octavias at work and they are surprisingly nippy and less peaky than the 170 engine.

just make sure you dont buy one with the engine vibration at 1500-2000 rev common fault with this engine i think. dealer said they are all the same when i complained. it will drive you up the wall well it did me over 18 months had to sell it in the end.but the best car i have ever had apart from that.

My superb elegance estate 1.8 auto from a main dealer 18 months old with 11000 was £17000. They wouldn't budge on the price but I got a proper spare wheel and full tank of petrol out of them. They only gave me £500 for my old scenic whereas kia had offered £800 when i was looking at the Sportage.

I really like the car

I only change cars every 10 years, so this could be my last one!

Just purchased a new superb 170cr 4x4 elegance estate after trading in a octy estate Vrs cr and they are worlds apart, the superb is more refind in all aspects. We tow a 24ft swift caravan which weighs 1500 kg and its awesome the 4x4 system is brilliant, it tows effortless in 6th gear and returns 30+ mpg and solo it returns 50+. You won't be disappointed!

My 140 CR tows a caravan circa 1100kg quite happily while loaded with 5 people and a full boot. If your trailer is likely to be a lot more than that, then I'd go for the 170, otherwise you should be fine. Might depend on what's out there.

and another positive vote. I swapped from a 140 hp Octavia estate which was nippier across country but the Superb Combi Elegance with 170 & DSG is a great car. Comfy, quiet and a good turn of speed if required. Mixed driving between 45 & 50mpg. Go for it!!

Except to buy an estate, which is what OP wants ;) ;) ;)

+1 for the 170. If it's anythimg like the Octy you'd get better fuel consumption than the 140, an extra 30 germanic donkies and a few more torques too, which would come in very handy towing your trailer.

yep sorry just copped that

Just waiting for the right estate to appear on the market now. I've looked around various alternatives (Toyota Avensis, Vauxhall Insignia - horrid underpowered thing, Passat), and nothing seems to come close for what you get for the money.

Did the Yeti cross your mind? I'm beginning to think about it after 2 yrs with the Estate. I pretty much under use the Estate though as I barely have a boot full these days. You possibly aren't lloking at new but the L&K Yeti in particular looks great value against the Superb.

As mentioned on another thread, I am in the market for an estate and ended up with a shortlist of Superb vs. Sportbrake. A bit of a price difference but - with the facelift launch and the demise of both the 0% VAT and the 2.0TFSI to which it applied, it came down to the 170 DSG vs. Sportbrake 2.2d 200PS (for similar performance). With the lack of Superb offers and the generous discounts on new Jaguars (along with the other "premium" marques who are also discounting heavily) the price difference is not as much as you would think.

I managed to drive both on the same route one after the other, and - good though the Superb was in isolation - the Sportbrake was more refined, the chassis was more composed and the 8-speed gearbox seemed more predictable than the Superb's DSG (I am already familiar with the latter on our Yeti). That, plus the prospect of better residuals, swayed me towards the Sportbrake. The loadspace, incidentally, is almost identical. It will be interesting to see if offers appear soon on the Superb, as they did fairly quickly on the all-new Rapid and Octavia. It's a buyer's market out there!
