Quick Oil question 5w-30 or 5w-40?

Featured Replies

So I'm looking to buy oil for my Fabia (1.9TDi PD130). I've read http://www.briskoda....n-my-fabia-vrs/ and it suggests a 5w-40 in Castrol Edge but all the websites (e.g halfrauds and Opie oils) suggest it should be a 5w-30... now 'm confused and don't want the wrong oil in it at high temps as I do a lot of motorway miles and so want this engine to last :)

Help and clarity needs please :o)

I don't think there would be a great difference between 5-30 or 5-40, take a look on this website

My dad used to work at skoda main dealer and they always put 5w 30 in. Normal 5w 30 if its serviced quite often or long life 5w 30 which is very expensive for longer service intervals hope this helps

I'm getting mixed results from that also:

That didn't display like the website copied - Oh well. I think I'll just go for the 30, as I'm going to follow on the 10K oil changes the previous owner did.

Normal 5w 30 should be fine for that amount pal

Basically you can use any of the above, some of the higher viscosity oils can be used above -15'c ambient.

I used 10-40 magnatec in the Lupo, reason for this is the car has done 122000 miles, oil will be changed every 12 months and there will be wear and tear after all those miles so oil with a slightly higher viscosity will be ok.

In the Fabia MK ii VRS and Yeti 170 TDI I use the same Q8 V long life 5-30 it works fine.

the car's on 117k milage James, regular changes at 10k as said before so I guess If I carry that on it should be ok.

Coming from a Petrol 10w-40 background I didn't think oil could conflict on cars

I suspect 5w 30 might be for longer period between servicing. I do mine very regularly and stick with the book 5w 40 505.01 grade (i.e 505.01 = PD TDI oil)

The 505.01 rating is critical for the PD engine.

I tend to use 10-40 in higher mileage cars. My neighbour works for an independent oil supplier and he gets me some good deals on oils, for the Lupo I had 3 litres of synthetic gearbox oil, 4 litres of Magnatec 10-40 and 1 litre of dot 4 brake fluid for £19  so, I tend to use what is on offer. I get 4 litres of Q8 V long life for £23 usually.

As long as you meet the requirements for your car as stated in the handbook you should be ok, the Q8 website shows what oils you can use for your car.

Jase, 507.00 is also ok for PD, the only difference is a lower ash content to work better with DPF on newer cars, I used the same Q8 V long life in a Passat PD, that did 130k in three years.

many thanks chaps :)

5w40, prefer the thicker stuff myself.

5w 40 is thinner than 5w 30 though isn't it? Unless my head isn't thinking straight tonight. Nope, I can see you were right after doing a quick google. :)

either, aslong as its vw 507.00 spec
