Best size tyres for 16" wheels.

Featured Replies

I bought some Seat 16" wheels off the bay for a winter set for my new vRS.The tyres where 205/55 16 on these wheel (factory size). What is the best size to keep it as close to the factory 205/40 17 ?

205/45/16 are as close as you're going to get :)

Probably 205/45/16

I see 205/45 16 is the best size with only 0.84% difference, but would 205/50 16 be acceptable with a difference of 2.52% ?. There is a lot more choice in tyres with the 50 profile over the 45. Would i notice a 2.52% difference?

205/50R 16 is what i had the winter before last for Winter Tyres, on 16 x 7 rims on a vRS Mk2.

'apmaman' from Dundee has sold his vRS and had nice White Steels with Winter tyres that might be for sale.

Along with other bits and pieces. See the 'Projects section'.

eg, 'apmaman's wheels.

Did you notice much difference with the speedo? I have the wheels already, just need to get some tyres.

The speedo did not matter to me, for the sake of 1 or 2 mph, just check them out on GPS.

they were Snow/winter Tyres and driving slower because its winter,

the days when the weather changed i changed the wheels back over.,.

But actually,

like 215/40/17 tyres or some 205/40/17 tyres the Speedo can be more accurate on 205/50/16.

you need to measure tyres on wheels side by side, the numbers on the side do not always reflect the actual Diameter,

it is tread and brand dependant.

george

eg

both marked 205/40/17 on the tyres.

I think one of the calculators I went on stated what you should keep it to (i.e. no more than 3% difference - I'm making that up, but you get the idea).

A 2.5% difference in rolling radius might not make a 2.5% difference to the odometer and speedo, but it might - at and indicated 70, you'd be doing 71.4 (wouldn't he - it's too hot for maths...).

George - trouble with your pic is there's no weight on the tyre you held next to it which would drop a touch.
