fabia 1.4tdi 55 plate oil advice

Featured Replies

hi all first post, i recently purchaed a 126k 1.4tdi just wondering what oil i should put in her? ive read a lot about 507 01...on the last service it quotes "oil 5 w30 fs qx"

also does the timing belt need doing again i assume it would of been done 4years ago(it was a ploice car in a former life up to 89k April 2010)

cheers

in advance

Jeff

It's important the oil conforms to 505.01 or 507.00 spec.

Without evidence of a previous belt change, I'd get it changed at the first opportunity. It's probably safe to say it's not been done since the police owned it.

Quantum is what a dealer will use, it's VAG's own brand oil manufactured by Castrol, don't skimp on an oil that 'meets' or is 'suitable for' buy one that is actually certified to the correct standard.

thanks for the replies, millers oil any good?

also i phoned the police service dept they changed the timing belt at 70k so im assume it will be ok until 140k? but i will get it done within the month(126k at the mo)

It seems recommendations for belt changes in different countries varies. In Finland there is no due date for belt. Just mileage 120 000km/ 74 500miles. I was amazed of this but this is what dealer and other sources here said. Because we have cold winters and plastic/rubber doesn't like cold I wonder how come it's 4 years in UK? I just changed belt in my Fabia in its 6th year birthday when mileage was due. I didn't see any cracks in it or marks of catastrophic failure anytime soon.

Just my 0.2cents. Anyways, don't blame me if someones belt fails after 4 years.. :bandit:

Presumably, given that the car had 89k miles on it in 2010, it must have been at least 2009 (or 2008) then when the belt was last changed. That being the case, the belt is at least 4 years old. So regardless of mileage it should in theory be changed.

As an aside, on 1.9/2.0 PD engines I'm sure the current mileage recommendation for cambelt replacement is 60,000 miles. I've seen 75,000 miles being mentioned for the 1.4 PD......I wonder if this is due to the 3 cylinder design (so shorter cam with fewer lobes/injectors/valves to drive) results in slightly less stress on the belt, hence the bigger mileage interval?

As for oil, I'd highly recommend sticking with Quantum oil (505.01 is perfect for your car) for the reasons Avalon mentions. You can get it easily online or from a dealer. It's especially critical on a PD engine that the correct oil is used to protect the cam lobes.

That's 93,205 miles on a 2.0 PD Leon, got to love VAG.

I just looked at the cambelt interval in the manual of my Octavia with the same 2.0 PD engine.

120,000 Km - approx 75,000 miles.

Nice that they have a clear and concise guidance on cambelt intervals! :wonder:

Cambelt-looks like a case of "Don't Panick ,Don't Panick, Mr Mannering ,sir" .And oil- same policy.

I thought the 1.4TDi cambelt was 40k miles or 4 years. Best practise is to change the waterpump too. Tensioners come in the cambelt kit.

Any PD TDi cambelt has a hard life due to the cam-driven injectors, add to that the fact that the power pulses are less frequent in a 3 cylinder engine, so the cambelt sees a lot of fatigue. I don't think the ambient operating temperature has a lot to do with it myself.

At least there's plenty of room in the engine bay for DIY-ers!

Are you sure it's 40k and not 60k? It's just it makes no sense for a diesel as to save anything on fuel you need to be doing high mileage and 10k a year is way too low.

Topic on here on 1.4 TDI cambelts. From memory it's 4 ( yep four ) years or 60 k . Mine got done ( in al the confusion ) at 63k and seven years .
