Track Tires

Featured Replies

So I was at croft yesterday and within a few sessions my New Rainsport 2's were not so new anymore, completely destroyed the tread bless them, R.I.P

Just wondering for all you guys who track your Fabia's (on standard vRS wheels) what tyres do you use and what size? I've been looking into Yoko AD08's as I went out in my mates type R with them on yesterday and I was extremely impressed with how the behaved but I'm not to keen on the wet grip they give as he said they're crap ! Looked at federal 595 RSR's today and they seem better in the wet with and equal amount of dry grip and a lot better price.

Rainsports really aren't for track work hence the name. Best tyre I've ever driven in the wet though.

I bought them because everyone on here said how good they were, rating them a lot over T1-R's they maybe good in the wet but even in the dry on normal roads I think there shocking, sidewalks are extremely soft and feel really wobbly hence why I'm asking about track tyres now.

I noticed the same thing about the Rainsports.

I think the treadblocks and side walls are super soft to give the best wet weather performance but they get mullered when pressing on.

My rear ones looked a lot like yours after 15 minutes on track at Castle Combe.

Personally I go for mismatched part worns or end of life decent road tyres ;)

I'm not deluded enough to think that any shortfall in my performance on track would be greatly improved by better tyres, so just take wahtever i can get my hands on.

At the moment i have a pair of 7 year old Contis on the rear and a mis matched pair of goodyear and federal on the front :)

Can't say i noticed any particular grip problems while blatting round Bedford a couple of weeks ago.

However some more serious opinons are expressed in this thread

like wise I wasn't impressed with them at all, I don't think ill buy them again tbh. Just fancy buying a decent set that will last me a whole day round a track without giving up lol, will look through that three cheers.

When we had them fitted on the Swift the fitter who we've known for years said it's an odd tyre in that some cars it suits but not others. Perhaps weight is a problem for them. They've done 10k all round so far and are fine.

My money would go on Toyo T1-R's (or whatever they're called now).

That said the Toyo Proxes 4's on the vRoomster held up well at Combe a few weeks back.

If you don't care about times too much, any old fairly worn half decent tyres will do.

New tyres will wear worse as they have too much tread, so the tread blocks move around more.

If you do care about lap times get a second set of track tyres so you don't kill your road ones when giving it the beans!

Croft is a killer for tyres - its mainly right-handers and the bump in the middle of Hawthorne's corner shreds tyres. My hankook v12's looked exactly the same so had to rotate half way through. Cadwell was quite good on tyres.

In my experience, if I were using a road tyre on track I'd use the Hankook V12's, I thought they were way better than T1-R's and about the same price.

However the difference between a road tyre and track tyre is night and day. Last time out I managed to get a scrubbed set of Hankook V70's cheap off a mate, they were unreal!! Sidewalls were so stiff the tyre fitter could hardly get them off the rim! And endless grip, never had an issue all day. My mate went from these to Federal RSR's as they're much cheaper, last longer and grip well, and he uses nothing but them now :)

I'm not overly fussed on Track timings but when it gets to the point where my tyres won't grip anymore round corners it kinda ruined my day, was battling with a scoob for while he couldn't catch me through the straights but as soon as it hit the corners he was on me so I had to let him past, where as my friends Type R with the AD08's on just never have up all the way round, think I'm going to give the federal RSR's a go
