timing belt failure

Featured Replies

Hi all, my belt just popped on my 1.9 tdi this morning, my fault 40k overdue...

does anyone know if these engines are prone to valve / piston damage during the failure?

cheers Keith

40K!....... Yeah there is likely to be damage, you may get away with the head off & new valves,if your unlucky piston damage.

40 k ? is that the interval to change Timing belt. Skoda India recommends changing at 80k. kilometers though

40 k overdue replacement..should have been done at 150k the car is now at 192k and now probably not worth a major engine strip/build

There's proof you cannot push the oem cambelt schedules much past the recommended distances. I imagine Skoda/VW ran these engines on a dyno setup for thousands of miles to come up with their recommended figures.

The OP will be working in miles, so more like 64_000 km overdue.

All diesels are prone to this, and it's not impossible to break the camshaft and/or chip the pistons and/or bend a conrod as well.

thanks for the reply s.. looks like Im looking for a new taxi...

That's an expensive lesson

My missus was driving our vRS home the other night when the car suddenly ground to a halt, the AA man said it was probably the timing belt, though he could "see some teeth at the top so it might be ok" was what i have been told but i'm away from home.

Is it likely i'm looking at a new engine or breaking the car for parts given i don't want to spend a load of cash on it?  A VW nut mate of mine reckons you can pick up a new engine for £250 these days?

If the engine is good and the valves haven't been mashed into the pistons (unlikely) then I'd just replace the head personally. You could end up with a complete pup of a replacement for £250

I've just spoken to a mate who runs a garage, even with mates rates and what not, he reckons it's around £800 to do the job properly even if the damage is at the low end of what might have happened.

TBH i don't even like the car that much so spending that much, then re-insuring it for £500 in 2 weeks isn't appealing.  Anybody know any decent breakers in the North East who might take it off my hands?

Break it yourself mate, take all the interior out, doors, bonnet, boot.....Basically as much as you can then put it up on Ebay as 'Breaking Skoda Octavia'  You will get far more for it like this than a breaker giving you a few quid for it. Once all the parts have gone either get a breaker to pick up the shell or get a grinder and cut it up and weigh in the metal.

Simple really  :wonder:

Simples!

To the OP......Give yourself a free Sunday and get stuck in to it as in take everything off it.  Its good fun to be honest especially if you are feeling stressed!  I am in demolition and have been for 11 years so have all the tools to break a car.....Ask me to put one back together......Would not have a clue, lol!!

Break it yourself. If your northeast I will have bits if they work. And you have plenty local northeast forums like vag cars, dub northeast etc.

The problem with breaking it myself is the time.  I need cash quick to buy something else as although i work from home or travel to London by train, the missus is just about to open a shop and needs transport.

tin0, what are you looking for?

I had a new rear caliper put on last year some time, the tyres are pretty new, though the alloys are a bit scuffed.

Brand new rear screen in there too as a seagull dropped a lamb shank bone on it about 6 weeks ago!

Everything else is pretty much as you'd expect for a 54 plate car as far as i know.

I would just be looking for trim bits, dash vents and rear door mech so not a massive amount really.

Where abouts are you located? You could try veedubs in Gateshead if you wanted to shift the whole car?

We're in Battlehill about 2 mins off the Coast Road.

Will look at veedubs too, cheers.
