Hi know this has prob been asked 1000's of times before, but not alot of info seems to come up on a search ?

Basicly my 5 speed box has a large hole in it now after my last trackday, and i'm struggling to trackdown a low mileage replacement box in good condition for sensible money.

However I keep getting told the 6 speed box is stronger, so therefore i'm thinking it would be easier (as in I can get the gearbox and get the car up and running again quickly), if I just convert it to 6 speed.

So what exactly do I need ?

6 speed box

both driveshafts

selector (heard I do need this, then heard that I don't) ???

Anything else needed ?

The O2M is allegedly officially rated to 350ft/lbs torque

Plenty of 5spd boxes out there running in excess of 350ft/lbs without issue

You need to consider the ratio's

The 6spd petrol O2Ms' have short ratio gears designed to get an engine to higher rpm more quickly

This is to match the the higher boost threshold of the K04

If the ratio setup doesn't match your boost characteristics, then you'll have a dog of a car to drive

You can of course the ratio's, but this adds cost

The 6spd box is heavier too

Personally, I'd stick with 5spd and spend the money saved on an LSD

The Leon Cupra, is a 6 speed and runs the K03s turbo still, so although the ratio's would be a little shorter, I wouldn't have thought it would be massivly different ?

I would rather stick with 5 speed, but finding a box is proving to be a pain in the arse, i've found 5 so far, 1 has 107k on it, and is sensible money but I don't know much else about it, 1 has supposidly 55k on it, but they want silly money, the other 3 are all £250, no idea of condition or miles (although I know atleast 1 of those 3 are out of a car that had a big engine fire).

Yeh I did see you bought a complete 6 speed setup, so does that mean I can have your good 5 speed box now ???

sold one about 2 weeks ago, so they are around, you tried billy? he had one?

cupra (non r) does have different ratios.

by all accounts the 5spd box is better than the equivalent cupra box from what i remember.

Yeh I have no doubt within 24 - 48 hours of me purchasing a gearbox, there will be about 10 that suddenly appear, with less miles and cheaper than whatever I end up with lol

I have looked through billy's forsale posts but didn't spot any gearbox's (shame it wasn't last year, as i'd have had his lsd box off him).
