What is the right 1.9 90bhp engine noise?

Featured Replies

This one is probably a weird one, I am mechanically savy but have no diesel experience.

What should a 1.9 PD 90bhp octavia Sound like?

She sounds sweet to me but I have no idea, I've only had petrol engines and always thought all diesels sound horrid!

I've only got 2 more months warranty so need to find any major problems now before I shoot myself in the foot

Cheers all

Nathan

is this the same 1.9tdi as was in the passat's in the early 2000's, late 90's? My dad has one and it only started to sound "tractory" when it went past 160k and 11 years old

Isn't the 90 bhp 1.9 PD a Mk1? Mk2 1.9 Octavias are all 105bhp, although they will be pretty much the same engine.

It might be worth asking on the Mk1 forum as well.

Either it is a 105 pd or a 90hp injection pump. First was in the mkII, second in the mkI.

Yep, that's a Mk2 all right. So it's definitely a 105bhp PD engine.

It's a bit hard to describe how it should sound. I have one in my Fabia estate and it is a bit more gruff than a 2.0 PD engine.....but not much. I don't know what your previous car was, but if it was any sort of common rail diesel engine, you can expect the 1.9 PD to sound significantly less refined.

Dugga dugga at idle then a lod brrrr oh **** wheel spin at take off then a quiet brr at cruise.

It's all subjective me owd.

Best call my insurer as they told me it was a 90 PD oops!

It's a fairly deep vibrate type noise... Soon goes quiet when cruising, but deep dugga dugga noise at low revs, pulling away and hard acceleration.

Ill try video it - oil and levels are all good - sometimes a bit odd on the clutch. Not sure if this is me or could be highlighting a dmf problem? I have never really drove diesels- should I give it beans when pulling or slowly increase revs? Dependant on how I pull away it sounds different every time!

Never thought I would ask such a stupid question but I want peace of mind before the warranty runs out :)

Anyone? :)

Something to consider is that there is a common problem with the air intake vibrating on these causing a deep rumble kind of sound heard through the car.

The dealer fixed mine for me.

I temporarily fixed it myself beforehand using a bit of card wedged between the intake and the plastic grille it sits up against.

Oh and to second the comments above. Definitely a PD105. They're not actually that noisy I find. I notice the engine nosie more in the current courtesy car (a 1.6 CR 105 Ibiza).

Yes the 1.9PD is a pretty agricultural sounding engine at idle. But I love them -- I've got two at the moment. They are bulletproof, and do not suffer from the turbo issues that the 2.0PD seems to be plagued with. The main issue with the 1.9 is the failure rate of the dual mass flywheel, but the beauty of this engine is that a solid flywheel conversion to get rid of the DMF is very successful. And I talk from experience here -- both mine are SMF converted after DMF failures at 44k miles on one car and 36k on the other. Now on SMF's, they are as sweet as a nut, and a hell of a lot nicer to drive than they ever were on the original DMF.

Don't worry about the engine itself sounding a bit gruff -- it's telling you it's a tough unit and ready for anything you throw at it!

That's a nice looking motor you have there, and quite a rarity being a 1.9PD L&K.

Cheers Mike!! :)

It is a right agricultural bugger but it does drive sweet. I've looked at the DMF thread but still have no idea if mine is having problems? It doesnt seem smooth as I thought it would BUT then again, I have never drove diesel.

Any easy ways of checking the DMF? Some mornings shes super smooth pulling away- other days shes not!

Obviously I havent got that long on warranty and the DMF is covered so :)

Love you all!! :)

Cheers

Some of the signs of DMF failure are:

Clattery noise at idle

Clattery noise when lifting the clucth at idle

Clattery noise/vibration when setting off

The best thing to do is mention it to the dealer that it's sometimes a little shaky when pulling away etc and get them to have a look.

if they come back and say they can't find anyting but then at a later date something does go wrong I think you are covered as you reported the problem while still in warranty.

This is a interesting one, any threads regarding the air intake? Sounds a little like I thought! :)

I will do this, many many thanks!

Mines quite noisey when cold but at normal temp its pretty quiet.I,ve got the same problem as phil E said earlier with a rattly air intake but the 1.9 is a great bulletproof motor :)
