Steering wheel deteriorating

Featured Replies

I will warn you in advance I am a little bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my car but....

When I noticed the rubber part of my VRS steering wheel was starting to wear I wasn't to happy, after all it's a 12plate with only 8k on the clock. That's the kind of thing I expect from a 100k car without a leather steering wheel.

Do you think I can complain on warranty to get it changed? I know it's very minor but its not great for such a new car is it? I don't wear a ring or anything like that which would cause it either.

Here's a pic anyway in the best light I could get.

Welcome to the forum.

Up to you, but you might as well point it out to the dealer now, and you have a couple of years to get it changed under warranty.

What i notice is how low you run your fuel.

Lol

Trust you George!

I noticed that mine is going the same way, but then I have driven over 40k in my mine. Think I will point it out next time it is in for a service but will most likely change next year anyway..

It's worth asking where you stand as the steering wheel, or at least the part you hold, would potentially come under "usual wear and tear"? It can't hurt to check.

Just looks dirty to me!

I love playing the fuel lottery ;)

Cheers guys, I think I'll pop in and see next time I'm passing the dealer. Strange that it isn't really a contact point like the '10 to 2' part of the wheel that is actually wearing well.

As for the fuel, as soon as the light comes on I'm normally straight to Tesco for some momentum but... This time I'm owed a tank by someone for running some errands so I'm waiting for them to come with me and do the painful part of paying!!!

Looks like the kind of deterioration the steering wheel on my 24 year old VW Polo is suffering... and the steering wheel is older than the car!

Definitely a trip to the dealers - don't see how they can argue that is wear and tear.

FWIW my steering wheel (on my VRS) still looks perfect after 31K miles (and I do wear a wedding ring) - it's just everything else that's falling apart...

I've got it on my steering wheel but I dont think its deterioration because it seems to come off, I wonder if its something from the moulding process such as a release agent or glue

The leather on my wheel looks like that and needs a clean. Need to find the right stuff.

Excuse my dirty leather, (and interior)

i like it to feel and look lived with.

but i needed to have a look to see where the rubber was worn because i thought it was maybe a different style of wheel.

I see it is where the bottom of the wheel would wear against trousers, jeans, overalls or the likes.

As much as i like a moan at a car Dealers, complaining about the rubber bottom of a steering wheel,

that probably will out live us all would be a bit much IMO.

(i would expect them to say, "thats why it is in rubber, to withstand the wear and tear". Stuff your strides though.)

I don't think it is actualy wear but mostly dirt from hands. My Roomie has a standard rubber steering wheel and I saw and seeing such markings many times. This dirt can be a nice mixture of dust, sweaty or dumb palms, and minor hand's leather cells dropping off our hands. And just because of rubber's texture which makes it look like very porous, that nice mixture makes itself stick comfortable right in there.

Cant really tell from my ipod exactly what is wrong from original pics but if it dont clean off then its wear and tear which is ridiculous on a car with 8k on the clock

Dont care what clothes the op is wearing - his trousers could be made of sandpaper and shouldnt look like that

Looks like more poor build quality and further proof Skoda is getting complacent

If youre lucky the dealer may help you as a goodwill gesture.I would show them it anyway and tell them I aint happy

Using a good leather cleaner/protector once a month or so does help as sweat from the palms will adversely affect the leather.

That will be why Oldie Sunday Drivers & Racing Drivers wear gloves.

(The 8000 mile old steering wheels leather looks great, its the rubber that is the worry for the OP.

Maybe needs some Petroleum Jelly for it.)

george

Doh!!!! I'm a plonker, should have read the OP....Don't know too much about Vaseline George ! :giggle:

Sounds like the ideal opportunity to upgrade to a Monte leather wheel, no rubber bits on that. ;)
