ABS/wheel speed sensor and faults

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I’ve been having an intermittent issue with my 2014 Octavia (160,000 miles) which has now become permanent. On startup (or very shortly afterwards) I get the following error messages:

- start-stop system;

- ABS/ESC;

- hill hold assist;

- ACC and Front Assist not available;

- Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

The car was last serviced by Skoda in September 2023. They plugged it in (for the bargain price of £95) and diagnosed the following:

Investigate intermittantly illuminated lights on dash - carried out diagnostic scan - fault stored for rear left

wheel speed sensor, left rear ABS wheel speed sensor open circuit

Suspect replacement nearside rear wheel speed sensor and wheel bearing required

The fault has recently become permanent so to try and resolve it I have just replaced the rear nearside wheel speed sensor, however this does not appear to have fixed the issue and I’m still getting all the same faults come up.

Anyone have any other suggestions before I replace the remaining sensors in the off chance that it’s one of them in addition to the rear near side?

No ACC is hard work!

Many thanks.

Could be a problem in the wiring, especially I'm thinking a connector as it's gone from intermittent to permananent?

Were the fault codes read and cleared after you fitted the sensor?

No, I’ve not got access to that kit, from videos I watched online the error messages disappeared as soon has the new sensor was fitted. I’ve been for a 5 min drive and they’re still there…

The odd one out is the stop start error. Is it working?

Suggest you get the battery and charging system checked

I assumed that was also linked to the wheel speed sensor, in that if the vehicle can’t confirm all four wheels are stationary the stop/start can’t activate?

I think I might have made a bit of a mistake in the part I’ve fitted. I have fitted the following:

https://web.tecalliance.net/bremi/en/parts/cars/part/47/50321/detail?targetId=58750&typeNumber=58750#@brc/brands:Car;targetType:cars/assem:SKODA%20OCTAVIA%20III%20(5E3%2C%20NL3%2C%20NR3)%201.4%20TSI;targetType:cars;targetId:58750;typeNumber:58750/lnkparts:Sensors;targetType:cars;assemblyGroupId:102747;targetId:58750;typeNumber:58750/assignedPartDetail:50321;targetType:cars;brandId:47;articleNo:50321;targetId:58750;typeNumber:58750

but I now see that it states for vehicles without ACC. Could someone point me towards one that would be suitable? I can’t seem to find any the specifically state they’re suitable for vehicles with ACC. Thanks.

Possibly, but what ever sensor(s) the speedo uses could also control the stop start.

And that's the 4 ABS wheel speed sensors.

Anyone know if a BREMI 51351 ABS sensor would be suitable for a vehicle with ACC? Sorry, can’t seem to post the link.

Thanks.

Ok, but one sensor was coming up as faulty but doesn't affect the speedo?

It depends how the ABS software calculates the speed signal it sends to the instruments, most likely it does some kind of majority voting so a single sensor failure won't affect the speedo.
