Cylinder Deactivation on 1.4TSI?

Featured Replies

I was wondering if anyone had news on whether the Octy will get the version of the 1.4TSI with cylinder deactivation as used in the Golf, or if this is something VW are keeping to themselves for now.

I think it will be for all soon, Skoda & Seat,

it is on VW's and Audis now.

VW are very good at using the paying customers as their Real World Road Testers with their Evolutionary Technology.

Its tried and tested on the engines with more than 4 cylinders within the VAG products, i hope it works out OK on the Smaller Capacity engines with 4 cylinders.

VAG have had engines that have cylinders that Deactivate without warning already, due to Valve, Coil, Plug problems etc.,

They just often pretend there is no major or widespread problem, but the Internet has started to catch them out on that front.

So lets support ACT/Deactivating Cylinders, and if there are any problems or snagging faults with them in the next few years,

lets hope that the Volkswagen Audi Group fess up early,

and do not keep customers in the dark and treat them like Mushrooms. (keep in the dark and shovel with sh,1t)

Been there, done that, almost had the crash. In my case 60 mph, on a dual carriageway.

I love the laughable fuel saving efforts that are being banged on about in all the latest car literature.

Cylinder de-activation: If this works then why is it not on every engine and not a little 1.4 unless the 1.4 isn't very efficient to start with? Surely a 1.8 needs this more than a 1.4, and why not on the 1.2?

Energy regeneration: When braking all generator power goes to the battery then disconnects the gennie when accelerating to provide less engine load and provide better economy and power: Really? In a diesel? What electrical load is there on this engine that a 1-2 second battery only assistance will give you better anything? 0.000x mpg better? In a petrol there may be some benefit but with a higher electrical load on a petrol engine the time the battery can supply power against generator assistance is greatly reduced.

And the best by far....

Stop - Start. Engine cuts out when stopped to save fuel: Even the owners handbook states that you will save more fuel with the engine off and re-starting the engine doesn't negate this effect so long as you've stopped for over 30-40 seconds. Sounds good but in heavy traffic I've only been stopping for <10 seconds a time and the car is gulping down the fuel when restarting.

Stop-start is a marvellous technology for increasing sales of expensive batteries and starters when they start failing out of warranty, plus allowing DPFs to cool down (more failures).

That's why they put a button on the dash to deactivate it. The car can't know when you will be setting off again.

...or just keep your foot on the clutch (manual version obviously) and it will not cut out. I only lift off the clutch when I can see the lights ave just changed to red or if you can see stationary traffic for a reasonable distance.
