Fabia 1.2 TSI 86 - TMC box tested!

Featured Replies

Ive been thinking of getting the TMC box for my 86ps Fabia TSI for some time.

Last week i finally orderd one and today i received it.

Before i placed the order i e-mailed some with Daron and he sent me a dyno sheet from a 86ps with the box stating around 120bhp.

But ive also read alot about the fact that some people say a remap is the only proper way to go and a box like this wont delivery the power in a decent way.

So i was very curious to test this tuning box and see if it works at all.

When i unpacked the unit there was a red ecu, wiring loom, instructions and some candy :)

The instructions were very basic and guided you through the actual installation but nothing more. It didnt mention anything about the dial on the ecu or if there was some kind of running-in time for the ecu.

The actual installtion process was very simple. Just unplug 3 sensors and plug them into the wiring loom. If you are an experienced mechanic you would probably have done it in 5-10min.

For me it took about 30minutes but 15min of those i was just trying to find a decent spot to place the new ecu..

After the installation i just started the car and everything worked as before. When i first when for my test drive i was quite dissapointed because i had expected more out of the box. Sure it pulled more/better than before but not that much as i had hoped for. (This could also be because my previous car was a Saab 9000 2.3T with 250hp, so i was expecting my Fabia to turn into that.. :) )

Then i decided to measure some acceleration numbers 80-120 3th gear for example. First try gave me a 6,1s run. BSR sells a remap for twice the price of the TMC box. The BSR remaps gives about 122bhp and improves the Audi A1 1.2 TFSI acceleration 80-120 to 6.7s from 9.3s. I also tried 80-140 and it came it alot lower than BSR stated numbers. BSR numbers can be found here http://sv.bsr.se/products/t2363/.

Even though i expected more from the begining im very happy with the box this far. The car now pulls strong all the way to the redline instead of dropping of above 4500rpm and it is also alot stronger all over the RPM band. There is no big spike that gives you the power in a very small RPM range as i first thought it would be.

So if you dont want to spend a smaller fortune for a remap i would definitly recommend a box from TMC. I cant really say anything bout the fuel consumption yet since ive only had the box for 1day. But hopefully it wont be worse if i drive sensible.. :)

If you want some acceleration numbers just let me know from what speed/gear and i will get it for you. I tried to make some 0-100 runs but im the worst starter ever so i gave up after a couple of tries..

I will try and post a photo of the engine bay tomorrow :)

TMC boxes are generally well liked, I have tried a vRS with one, initially it doesn't seem a massive improvement, but once you get into your day to day driving, especially fast road overtakes, you suddenly realise what a difference its made! enjoy your purchess ;)

Snowman89 - Thank you for your post :) . I'll be following this, because I am thinking of installing a TMC unit myself. Good reading!

Please tell us about the fuel consumption when you can.

Still tempted to get one if they are as easy to fit as people say.

Yup easy to fit matey :)

tmc boxes ...how much ?

What 0 to 60 times would I be looking at for a fabia with the box?

I dont know about the 1.2 .... but on the 0-60 sprints for the vRS for standard is about 6.8 seconds... with box about 5.8 so you are talking about a second gained.... its only about 20 bhp up in the vRS though, I would expect a bigger gain on the 1.2 than 1 second.....

TBH its in the mid-range and general drive you notice it most, i.e overtaking a lorry on an A-road....

According to Skoda the 105 is 10.2 and the 86 is 11.7.

So if it makes it better than a 105 that's going to be a huge difference!

Potentially slashing over two seconds off the 0-60mph time.

Not that it makes much difference but the 105 booked at 10.2 for a 0-62 time. The 0-60 is booked at 9.9....Think that's right?

No idea since i suck at launches. But 80-120 was a huge improvement:) Now it also pulls heavily all the way up to the redline instead of dying at 5k.

I will report back when ice done some longer journeys regarding fuel consumption.

Okey a small update. Ive only done about 300miles of city driving since i installed the box. The fuel consumption has increased a bit but nist likely that is due to my heavy right foot. Previously nothing happend when i pushed the accelerator but now its so much fun. :)

I removed the box yesterday since im booked at my dealer to solve the oil leakage from the cam chain cover.. But im thinking of selling the tmc box since i dont use the car that much and would rather buy racecarbs for my motorcycle for the money:)

The 1.2tsi 105hp version in my Monte Carlo has a cold air pod, tmc tuning kit running on level 9(comes on 6) and a forge Motorsport BOV and intake pipe and it makes a massive difference. The torque is huge! Don't have official numbers but would be 30-40hp gain easily. TMC don't recommend dialling the power up unless other mods are done also. Looking for a downpipe now which I'm told makes the biggest difference. 10-15hp on its own

Good to hear others experiences. I really liked my box to. But since i dont use the car that much anymore id rather spend the money on my motorbike instead:)

But the interest for buying a TMC box seems to be close to zero..

Are you selling your TMC box?

Are you selling your TMC box?

Yeah. Its been sitting in the box that i got it deliverd in since some weeks back. Since my car is scheduled to be at the dealer in a week because of a oil leak at the cam cover..

And if i need more power or speed i just switch to my motorbike instead :) The car got "to" fun to drive which caused my fuel bills to increase.. The car didnt really consume more fuel if i drove it the same way as before. But since it was alot more fun to drive with the box i kind of used more power when driving compare to before, therefore consuming even more fuel :)

they sell for the 1.4tsi like hotcakes! my old one was on here for literally minuyes :o

I'm sure someone will have it ;)

Heh well i thought so to.

But not even one person have even viewed the ad :S

I have read it now, to be honest its getting lost now in the ads,

maybe someone can ask you a question in the ad and bump it up.

any how we can bump it here untill you get a customer, maybe just the Postage bothering them,

& Is that the best price you can do on it.

Strange it still looks like 0views.

Yeah maybe its the fact that im located in Sweden..

Well the fact is that the shipping to UK would cost me about 30gbp and the box sells today for about 399GBP i dont think that 300GBP inc shipping should be to far off.

Now im just thinking about using it again since i dont feel like giving it away for free..

Sorry for bumping my old thread..

But it seems as if there really is no interest at all in the TMC box..

I even posted "open for offers" in my FS thread without any replies..

What would be a good price for a buyer?

  • 4 years later...

Sorry for the revival, but on tmc's website there's a box for the 86hp and one for the 105hp, can I use the box for the 105hp version for my 86hp ?

  • 1 year later...

Hi there, this is my 1.2 86hp running a TMC Box on setting 9.

Engine mods:
vrs intake with the box mod

First run is stock, second is with the box, ignore the dotted graphs
