Juddering when breaking: possible causes?

Featured Replies

Hey all

The beast has developed a bit of juddering when I break. Not every time, but more often than not. There's no brake lights on the dash, and a visual inspection suggests the brakes are just fine.

If I let up on the braking and reapply, it will often go away.

Wheel alignment?

Any thoughts are welcome!

Cheers

Danny

ABS pickup ring broken? Warped discs? Sticking sliders?

[Nitpick note: I hope when this happens, you are braking not 'breaking'!]

And I agree - sounds like warped disk / worn wheel bearing / loose/worn suspension joint. Is it just one side, or both sides when it happens?

Balls. I knew posting from my phone was a bad idea!

try some enthusiastic braking, say 60-20 very hard, repeat 5 or 6 times, get them good and hot and see if that makes a difference.

A sign of corrosion on the discs, particularly the rears?

Change of wheels/tyres and the problem hasn't surfaced since...hmmm,

Dirty disks are more common than warped.

Antisocial braking helps.

Thanks for the suggestions.  The discs were warped, it turns out.  Running smooth again now they've been replaced.

Discs don't warp easily. Did you get the calipers checked? If a caliper is faulty it'll just warp the new disc.

I had this on a previous car, it went through 3 discs on one side before they replaced the caliper.
