caliper carrier problem the bolts been threaded by previous owners

Just done my front discs and pads and painted my calipers when taking off the caliper carrier brackets that has two bolts the top bolt thread is fine but the bottom bolt has threaded and some kind of thread lock type stuff to keep it from moving,does anyone know the size of the bolt to get it heli coiled never done that before but going to try to repair the thread any help is always appreciated

I had the same happen to me last week. Got a guy to come out and sort the thread cost me £50. Vw sell the bolts for £2.45.

Also happend to me, it isn't a case of them cross threading...

It's because the bolt sticks out about 15mm or so and gets alot of build up of dirt and rust as well as being hot, cold, hot, cold etc...

When the bolts get removed the dirty rusty threads damage the threads on the hub making them chewing gum.

I stripped mine going overkill with the windy gun anyway, very foolish mistake!

Mine was drilled out and heli-coiled to the right size, cost me £30 and cleaned the threads up on the original bolt.

It's not the end of the world :)

15mm! An idea would be to wind a nut on the end and nip it up lightly with a smidge of threadlock. That should stop the crud problems when removing.

I nearly asked why didn't they (VAG) fit a nut, then thought.... nuts cost money!

buy a helicoil kit and do it yourself .... v coil kits arent dear on ebay and they will do the job .... just fond out what size u need

I know what you mean but... A steel nut on a steel bolt, tightened or torqued properly, vs a crappy alloy thread in a component? If it's clamped/secured properly, it'll be fine.

I recall the torque being about 150nm +90 deg.

Either way I tighten them to 120nm and have no issues.

it may not pass the test having a nut on with a vigilant mot'er and the standard hub will be cast ... not an alloy and helicoil thread inserts are usually stainless steel so should be more than capable ..... if in doubt drill it out to the next size up and retap.
