Possible gearbox failure / what fits?

Featured Replies

So the wheel bearing noise on my car turns out to be either driveshaft or... Gearbox noise.

It only comes on if the passenger side is being turned, doesn't matter which gear it's in. The noise doesn't come on at all if the driver side is being turned.

Which means its the n/s/f driveshaft making a rumble noise. ....or

It's the diff on the passenger side wearing/rumbling.

I can only hear the noise between 15mph and 25mph and that's it, rest of the speeds is fine.

Soooo yeah, if its gearbox which ones fit? I've got a choice from a couple of pd golfs mk4 and mk5, passats, leon and Toledo.

So how isn't it a wheel bearing?

tried yer drop links? Had the exact same issue on mine a few years ago, a few quid for the drop link and all sorted. Cheaper than a bloody gearbox.

Sorry forgot to mention both wheel bearings have been changed.

I checked by jacking the car up on one side, starting it and putting it in fourth gear and letting the clutch up slowly. The noise is loud and noticeible with the passenger wheel off the floor spinning (louder with the wheel off) but you get no noise at all if you jack the drivers side up and do the same, smooth as anything.

take drive shaft off and do same? if knocking stops replace a drive shaft ... if it still knocks then gear box off ??

I haven't taken the driveshaft off yet and for some silly reason didnt think that was an option! Duh..

I'll jack it up, take the driveshaft off and start It to see if the noise goes off.

Thanks

Well I haven't checked yet but the joys of working in the trade means I get things done cheap!

I was gonna get a second hand box for £100 but... I've got a friend that can recon mine with all new bearings etc for £160 so going down that route if its whats needed.

In also quietly happy with the prices for things...

£33.65 for service with the correct vw approved PD oil, oil filter, air filter and fuel filter.

Sachs Clutch, dual mass flywheel and slave cylinder with new bolts etc for £265

Timing belt, new pulleys and tensioner and water pump for £66.50

2liters of gearbox oil £10.60

So for around £500 I'm getting a recond gearbox, new dual mass flywheel and clutch, a full service and full timing belt kit.

Where did you get your clutch, DMF and CSC mate, that's very cheap!

Euro car parts mate, all Sachs units as well apart from the slave cylinder is LUK.

I'll PM you to save clogging your thread.

if your reconning the box you might aswell get them to weld up the arms and remove the rivets to make the box abit stronger

I really wouldn't want to be scrimping on the box oil dude, I'd stick with the correct oem oil from tps.

That was for 75W80 which everyone seems to say is better than 75w90 which is recommended.

If I do get the box recond I'd let them suggest and supply the correct oil anyway, was just pricing things up for an idea of cost.
