Noisy ticking on vRS (Tappets?)

Featured Replies

Hi

Came to start the car at about 3-ish today and there was a higher pitch ticking noise that i've never heard before. Its different to the deeper diesel 'hum' and sounds like my old Punto when that was cold (renouned for noisy tappets)

Drove around for a bit, got it upto temperature and still this ticking was there. Went back home to see what the Father had to say, he was like 'I cant hear anything' But it was definately there- he never drives it. After revving it a few more times I set off again and the noise went away.

I dont like noises that sound like my old Punto!!! :( Any ideas?

Cheers

Check the oil level?

My Octy does this sometimes, has a really metalic tappet sound and then it seems to vanish again.

Must be related to ambient and engine temp or something.

Cheers

My octy started this last week and its due for a service shortly, so I'll find out why it ticks then, but doesn't impact on performance

I checked the oil yesterday and its fine.

It is a metallic noise which you can really hear with the windows down whilst driving. Its just ive never heard it before and ive only had the car for a month with 1700 miles on the clock!

Isn't there something about the octavia's that do this...

Something to do with the oil needing to get round the tappets and when starting the oil isnt there to get to them or something, it's on the site somewhere...

I agree with Kev. Assuming you have room for a little more oil, try adding a drop and seeing if it makes a difference, You're adding it to the cylinder head, so it gets to the tappets first.

Thanks for the replies :)

Unfortunately the oil was pretty much full up, so cant really add anymore. I'll see if the same thing happens tomorrow, hopefully it might have been a one off?!! Doubt it lol

Found this info about the 1.8T engine, maybe the same applies for the PD...

A 1.8T makes a number of unusual noises which worry owners but are normal, these include:

A rattling noise like a diesel for a few seconds on startup from cold...

The noise is from the hydraulic cam lifter, it stops after a few seconds when oil reaches the lifter.

Hope that helps

Like suggested above, it's most likely temperature based - it'll make a less worse noise once it's broiken in too.

Don't worry about it. If you need reassurance ask your dealer.

Just to let you know: You're not alone with your worries. I have it too and I'm having it checked soon.

I have decided to pay for removal of the top valve cover for a checkup on the lifters and valves.

Might be nothing but I'll sleep better once I now for sure.

Have you tried pressing down on the valve cover when the noice is there?

Strangely enough I can lower the noice by pressing down on the valve cover. It's not because I dampen the noise with my hand, but it has to do with the fact that I dampen the engine vibrations and by doing so the noise is less evident.

Usually my noise is there when engine is cold too, but on sporadic occassions when engine is really really hot it's been there as well.

Sounds to me like a lifter with false movement.
