Proper alternator for 1.9TDI AGR Estate (1999 year)?

Featured Replies

Because of some other incorrect parts that were fitted to this used Estate, I am suspicious that the alternator that is in my car isn't the correct fit.

It is VAG part number: 038 903 018 LX 01 with a 90Amp capacity.

When I looked up that part number, I got hits for it belonging in a Jetta, so I wonder whether I should be replacing its pulley and rebuilding it, or if I should be looking for one that is a proper fit.

A mechanic friend of mine said that 90A is correct for my car (manual a/c, power windows, no seat heating, no ABS).

And part of the suspicion is the "fix" that the previous owner did to the pulley on the alternator...

(The welding. The grinding was my attempt to get to where I could have a good enough grip in a vise to get it out.)

And is there any surefire way to know which of the two possible freewheel pulleys should fit to this alternator?
