Few problems

Featured Replies

Hello guys

Got a few problems that need addressing.

1. A squeak in gears 2/3/4/5 at low revs - To me is sounds like the Aux belt ? anyway to tighten it?

2. Squeaky radiator fan - anyone got idea's? bar from a replacement?

3. A pipe fell off from a canister under the intake manifold - anyone know what that is?

4. Previous people who did the timing belt have broke the timing belt cover! Looks an absolute pig to do on this car!

5. Tappy cold startup - it makes a very clear metallic tap on first startup of the day - I gave it a service with some Fuches TITAN 10w/40 (because its a 115k mileage vehicle) or was that completely the wrong idea.

Thats really it !

I knew saying my Red vRS was behaving jinxed it!

Cheers

Ade

Get that thick rubbish oil back out, and put some decent stuff in. 115K is not a particularly high mileage vehicle, and that oil would be better off in a tractor.

Might also be worth do oil pickup aswell

To dispel a common myth, the second number in an oil specification determines the oils operating thickness. Therefore 0w-40 oil is the same thickness as 10w-40 at operating temperature. The first number determines its ability to flow from cold at engine startup 0w will flow better cold than 10w, so 0w is a much better used in the winter and colder weathers

So the oil you have in is fine in the weather we are having at the moment

People should stop spouting false info if they are not well informed

Tappy noise on startup, thinner oil will flow better on cold start up

plus thought the vrs was ment to run on 5w40

Possibly but if he genuinely has loud tappet noises then you should be looking deeper than different oils to solve the problem.

Just make sure its not the charcoal canister or the injectors which can make a similar sound to the untrained ear before jumping to conclusions

With regard to number 2, may be worth spraying to WD40 on the axle of the rad fan before spending bigger money on replacing it. Cheap to try even if it doesnt work!

No. 3 Would probably need a pic of some sort - there's a lot of pipes under there

Not sure if No4 is a comment or statement but not had to do a Cambelt change on my car as yet, had one done just before I bought it - Doesn't look like much fun though. Im sure a cover replacement from Skoda shouldn't be too much or just had a look on the bay of e: http://www.ebay.co.u...W-/111089538639 £11

Thanks all

I used the 10w40 as I had it spare and it should be fine considering temps and mileage.

I plan to replace this weekend anyway as its due a service

The tappy noise is on cold startup only and for about 2 seconds, to me it sounds like oil getting to the head - not a great noise

The charcoal canister does make a ticking noise constantly. Presume that's a 1.8t thing.

If the tapping is tappets and it stops after 3s (starter spin time + your 2s), then either you've proved that 10W is too thick, or you're not using a filter with an anti-drain valve.

my vrs has had nothing but 10w-40 according to its history :wonder: doesn't tap runs sweet

i got mine direct from SEAT so i dont think that will be the problem.

I think it could be pickup pipe - but that'd happen on all startups and the head didnt look sludged compared to some.

Mine runs on 5w40 oil and is fine

I had a squeak coming from the auxiliary belt area a few months back.

Replaced the belt and the squeak went and hasn't returned yet.

It was a bit fiddly to put the new belt on the lower pulleys, but with the help of a stick I prevailed :-)

I got this fixed it was the auxiliary tensioner that was squeaking !

Tapping sound has gone on startup since I changed the pickup pipe, oil to quantum 5w-40 and oil filter.

Glad to hear you got the prob sorted. I would imagine the tapping was probably due to the pickup which was probably past its best

Cambelts on the cards now, however it seems ill have to get that done at a garage :( if only i had all the tools i had!

Forgot about this one. My handbook states 5W-30, and although that is admittedly for a variable service interval, any performance turbo car deserves better, and more importantly CLEANER oil. And that's where the longlife oil comes in. It reaches it's require specification and long-life status by being filter much, MUCH cleaner than standard oils, with far less particulates in it (which also affect the viscosity). And this is WHY I refer to the Fuch's Titan as suitable for a tractor, NOT down to ignorance about oils and specifications, because I can assure you this most certainly isn't the case. And it is nowhere near the quality of the correct longlife oil for a vRS.
