Gearlever jumps under load when in reverse

Hi all, I have a 2011 1.6 TDI Elegance estate. When about 15 months old I started to get a one clunk as I reversed. At first I thought it was a rear brake shoe comimg unstuck, but after a while I traced the noise to the gear lever whch jumped up slightly with a clunk as the load was taken up (but remained securely in reverse gear until manually returned to neutral). Has anyone else experienced this occurance?

Hmm - sounds like gear linkage maybe... if it's a 2011 do you have a wee bit of warranty left?

Maybe engine/gearbox mounting loose.

Thanks guys, yes there is warranty left and I had car into Skoda for investigation. As far as they could see there was nothing wrong. It was possible that the gear lever shaft was sticking down and the spring was taking time to push it back up. They said that the unit was a sealed unit and would take several hours to strip down. However if they found nothing or it was a bit of dirt etc. it would not be covered by warranty and I would have to pay for the labour involved! Hence why the question is posted to see if others have had a similar problem. I'm not ready to part with several hundred pounds on a situation where there is obviously a fault but it may or may not be covered by warranty! Tis problem started to occur when the car was about 14 months old.

geow, got to agree with bryanb, sounds more like a bottom engine/gearbox mounting moving a bit because it's either loose or failing/faulty. You may be able to tell if it's the bottom engine/gearbox mount loose by selecting reverse gear. Next, reverse backwards with a bit of gusto but obviously, somewhere safe where you cannot hit anyone or anything. BUT...DO NOT LET THE CLUTCH FULLY UP., you must not let the engine go on the overrun or brake you in anyway. So in other words, immediately as you start to move under acceleration, push the clutch back down again and stop the car. STILL WITH THE CLUTCH FULLY DOWN, select 1st gear. Next, move off fairly quickly in 1st gear to see if you get a clunk as you move off. This time let the clutch fully up as you move off. If you do get a clunk it will be the engine mount moving again back into position. Of course, it may be a sticky selector plunger and spring as suggested. Let us know how it goes. Good luck.

I am surprised with the dealer's comments really. What do they mean there is nothing wrong? Does it make a clunk and jump or it doesn't? It's not a brake pad or any other item covered by fair wear and tear clause, is it?

Just because they do not have a fecking clue and couldn't be bothered to to the job it doesn';t mean it is OK for them to scare you with large bills for something which is clearly a warranty repair. I'd suggest contacting Skoda UK customer services technical depratment in order to clarify the issue.

I personally have no clue what could it be but if the gearbox is moving on it's mounts as other suggested and this is the symptom if such it can lead to much more serious damage and catastrophic failure in time - perhaps they are hoping the time involved would take it beyond the warranty period?

Just acquired a Fabia II with exactly the same thing. If you put it in reverse

and then pull the gear stick up before you actually reverse it shouldn't make the

noise. On mine it definitely seems like it's the gear stick sticking down. If you pull it up

quickly you can replicate the noise.

I assumed it wasn't serious. It was unnerving at first though.

I haven't investigated any. Lubrication required somewhere?

Hi, thanks for your replies.  Firstly, Estate Man,  followed your suggestion and although clunks in reverse (you can see the gear knob move upwards in synchro with sound) there was no sound accelerating forward.  Guess it's not an engine mounting and probably a sticky selector and spring.  Phoned Skoda customer services who said they had no one on site who could answer the query but noted on their system.  Is there a telephone number for Skoda technical help queries?  Rich, thanks for posting, at least I now know I'm not the only one with the symptom, it's been around on mine now for about 6 months.   Jabozuma, haven't posted in "Ask the tech" forum since it is a subscription forum and I haven't subscribed as yet.

Hi, im ovner of Fabia II 1.4 TDI PD (2008) and last week when i shift in reverse and release clucth, i was hear big bang in transmission and then crunches.From that time reverse gear was no longer available, it was only crunches.

After the third time of disassembly of transmission i found, that the sprocket for reverse gear is upside-down.And the error is already from the factory.In this time (four years)nobody open the transmission, service that does not have a record for this.The error was that - because wrong position of sprocket(upside-down)the sprocket is not lock in the reverse position, but it has moved forvard against the third gear sprocket.My proposal is to open the gearbox and check this sprocket.
