SMF in 1.9 4x4

Featured Replies

Hi folks, back again in my second 4x4, anyhow, bought the car two weeks, second day of owning and had a horrible knocking/slurping noise when the car was cold from what I thought was top right of engine. Took back to garage who were just about clueless after waiting around 2 hours for engine to cool down(30 mile trip to garage). Said yes they could hear a noise but wasn't sure. got step dad to listen and said it could be flywheel or an engine mount. Plenty of searching on here reveals both seem common faults but the noise only seems to be really apparent when its cold, is this a sign the DMF is on its way out and ive caught it early, car has 130k but getting back to title, if I do get them to change it has anyone put a single mass in the 4x4 or does it not make any difference in regards to drivetrain? Got no loss in power or drive, car is giving expected mpg, no clutch slip which makes it more annoying to try and diagnose(a scan also through up no faults

As far as I know there aren't any SMF conversions availaible for the 1.9 4x4, think it has a clutch unique to the 1.9 4x4 with the 6 speed box as all other 105pd engines have a 5 speeder only for which there are conversions all over the place.

I think some people on here have bought SMFs being told they will fit the 4x4 but once they have dissambled the whole thing they find they dont fit. I'm sire there is a thread on this somewhere.

Well looks like the DMF is going, took it too my local friendly place and he said sounds/looks like it :(. Just rang the garage that I bought it off 2 weeks and they are trying to work their way out of any help by saying well it hasn't failed completely so isn't covered by their warranty........currently raging and waiting for the boss to phone, not a good start to 2nd owning of one of these. Anyone know the best place to buy a dmf/clutch kit from (seems you cant get a SMF kit for the 4x4) so I can pass the info onto my local place as guessing im gonna have to stump up for this

Talk to the Citizen's Advice Bureau, failing after 2 days you could possibly reject the car, OR get it fixed elsewhere if they wont & go through the small claims court for the money, that threat alone may be sufficient to focus them

Well the reply has been its a wear and tear item which I was expecting(along with just keep driving it as it hasn't failed its just worn!!!!!!), still waiting for the boss to phone me after chasing him all day, gonna get some idea's on kit prices this evening and then book in with my local trusted place to get sorted, the above is fine but then car less and still waiting for cash to come through

Martin, moneysavingexpert would love this. Item not fit for purpose, bud, if it is starting to fail after few weeks. (I have replied to your other post).

I would persue this further with the garage it came from.

My rattle was most noticeable from behind nsf wheel, & 112k miles. Dmf was the immediate response from mechanic (luckily, next door to seller) so they agreed to replace. He thought few hundred quid, but it was nearly eleven hundred. see other post, hope they both help.

Good luck.

Re my earlier post

starting to fail after 2 days or even 2 weeks the garage are on very sticky ground. write to them formally explaining the situation & offering them the chance to repair it, you have to give them that option. Add if they wont repair it you will get it repaired at a dealer of YOUR choice & will ber persuing them through the courts for the money. in the letter also refer back to when you first told them

BUT make sure you put it in writing, in a few months time should it go to court you often find if its not in writing memories seem to forget. If you have no proof you offered them the option to repair you are probably stuffed.

If its a Skoda dealer also offer to name them on here

Not a skoda dealer, just the usual small car dealer. Would not be having it fixed there due to no trust in their mechanic who A) couldn't ID the noise when I first took it back and B) said I don't know much about these engines so carry on driving until it gets worse

Still battling with garage but have found a SACHS clutch/dmf kit from darksidedevelopment for a reasonable £295............my normal bloody garage though wont let customers supply their own parts it seems!!!!!!!!!!!! Will not listen to me on issues of 4x4 and getting the right kit and seem to rely on the reg only........which means the kit/parts only get listed for the 1.9tdi with 5 speed box, will they listen, nope. Done all the work for them in terms of finding right parts to cut down hassle of finding out wrong kit ordered, explained all this and just fobbed off with a estimated £1k bill for sachs flywheel and LUK clutch(reading on here shouldn't ideally mix flywheel and clutch makers)......strangely enough walked out and need to find another garage now that understands the issue
