ABS/ Traction warning lights, ''again''

Featured Replies

Hi all, The car has been back to dealers twice now about these lights coming on, Done the usual checks, No codes coming up, They had the car 2 weeks and the lights (supposedly) never came on for them, I drive the car away from the dealers and up come the bloody lights!!...Switch engine off then back on, The traction light goes off, ABS light stays on then drive off it goes out, Then after a while both lights come back on,, But NOT always, Might stay off for couple of days but does come back on.. Anyone please got any ideas what the problem could be, I've give up with the dealer and i'm just sort of living with these lights keep coming on but it's getting on my nerves????ANYONE ???? :@

Someone must have had this :( ,, Haven't they??

If the warning lights are lit, there should be some codes stored.  Without any clues it's impossible to pin point the cause.

It also helps to know exactly what engine/car these faults are occurring on.

Well the car is a 2005 octavia estate TDI 2.0.. It's been into the dealers 4 times now, They test drive it over a week or so and reckon the lights don't come on for them. I go to pick it up and 2 hundred yards down the road the lights come on again,,Don't know if the dealer knows what fault it is and don't want to repair it cos of the cost they will incur (warranty), I just don't know,, But gonna have  to give them an ultimatum, Fix it, or i will be taking legal advice about this. Hope that might work cos i'm really fed up with this problem now...

Try another dealer who knows what there doing. they dont need to see the lights as a code is stored.

Had similar recently, but also with the tps light too, not sure if you have that.  It was the magnetic  surround on the hub had come away, so the abs sensor could not take readings, started off intermittent then lights came on all the time when driving, needed new rear hub and sensor.

Check for a break in the load signal cable coming off the alternator. Sounds daft but I had a similar issue with my Polo, and a trawl on Google showed a similar issue with Seats, so a VAG problem it would appear.

I had this and it was due to a rear wheel bearing being knackered

Dodgy ring for me :giggle:

Magnetic ring in rear left hub had rusted and a chunk fell off causing the implausible signal. Codes were stored though.

Is it a Skoda dealer ? Sounds like they need to do a road test and monitor the ABS and wheel sensors. I would expect a code stored somewhere though.

Might be worth seeing if there is someone local that could scan it with VCDS the next time the lights have been on.

Check out the list of owners in the VCDS section of the forum.

Sensor error will often clear itself if you're driving below 30mph only to reappear when you speed up.

Recent experience of a friend of mine that is a mechanic at an independent garage, pattern replacement bearings can cause issues as well. As it was at the garages cost, he recently he fitted two pattern bearings on an Ibiza that then gave sensor issues above 20 MPH, until the garage took his advice and ordered an OEM replacement that was fine. The daft thing is that it cost them twice as much in labour time than they would have saved by going the pattern part rather than OEM in the first place.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll try and keep this updated with what actually gets done, Might be of some interest for others with the same problems in the future..

Right guys, just a little update, Bought myself a V gate VS450, Plugged it in and getting codes (which dealer said didn't exist) 00287 ABS wheel speed sensor- Rear right-Sporadic  (G44)...

And 00987 Lamp for braking light-left-sporadic  (M9)

Anyone make anything of that ??

Probably the rusty ring in the hub. It may or may not have damaged the sensor. It's not easy but with the wheel off and your head in the arch you can just see the sensor ring on the hub. If you can do it safely you could take the wheel off and spin the hub to look for any damage to sensor ring.

If it is that it's a new hub, you can't replace the ring on it's own. Not a hard job for a mechanic but the OEM part is about £120 (that's for the VRS).

Also sounds like you need a new brake bulb. 20p for that at a factor.

Thanks mate, I'll have a looky when i get some time off work, The brake lights work ok so i just assumed that was probably an old code and deleted it.
