Server 2008 (WHS2011) DNS Query

Featured Replies

Please be gentle as i've only really started dabbling with server OSs'

I've had WHS 2011 running on an HP Microserver for a couple of years now.

Over the weekend I set it up to be my DHCP server, all working fine, even managed to get it to automatically set up my Mitel IP Phones.

I also configured it to be my DNS server, all working fine relaying queries to Googles DNS servers.

What I also bought on the weekend is a WiFi IP Camera to monitor the nursery. I want to give it a nice easy to remember name so you don't have to type http://192.168.0.241:82 I know I could stick in the favourites but where's the fun in that!

I've managed to create an entry that I can route to the IP address but it wouldn't take the port number 82 on the end.

So long story short, how can I translate:

jamescam

into

http://192.168.0.241:82

Cheers!

You can't. DNS will resolve the hostname only. Can you change the port the camera listens on? My D-link one could listen on two ports. If you can get it to listen on port 80, that should do it.

The only other thing I could think of doing would be to set up IIS on the server, and do a redirect to the camera, specifying the port, but that's a bit of a messy way to do it.

Thanks for the replies, I would have thought such a simple thing would have been doable with DNS, obviously not!

The hosts file thing would need to be done on every machine in the house which isn't the elegant solution I was after really.

IIS is my next step (after setting up a Lync trial) I was going to create an intranet type landing page so I suppose I could put a link to the camera IP on the home page.

Cheers.

Once the A record has been created you could always type http://jamescam:82

Run dcpromo on your machine, create a new domain - Get all the machines on that domain and run a GPO on every machine.

All sounds like good fun :D

The Lync project has been shelved for now, changing a WHS into a proper domain controller breaks too many things!

I'm looking into getting a basic Dell Server with 2012 Essentials and running that as my desktop / server instead of the HP Microserver and Home Built desktop I use at the moment.

Then I can get some experience with a proper server and look at Lync again.

You should look into Cisco Jabber if you can - Far better than Lync bud.
