Wrong Oil in engine

Featured Replies

In my rush on saturday I did not check the oil my local dealer sold me. I asked for a top up bottle of oil for the skoda Fabia vRS 1.9 PD Tdi.

So I topped the oil up as it needed it and went off on my way. It wasn't until Kim said "this isn't the right oil" later that evening that I knew it was the wrong oil. I'd put 502 in.

Now I haven't had a chance to get to the dealer again but I think I may e-mail them but in the meantime will this damage the engine or harm it in anyway? Would I be best changing all the oil and starting fresh?

Any views other than "you dipstick mike" would be great

Thank you

Mike a.k.a. "Rodney"

Cheers Richard it was indeed the dealer in question.

Anybody know if it will do any harm?

I can't imagine you put that much in Mike did you?

I'm no expert but I would think that half a litre or so would be absorbed into the existing oil.

As for conatacting the garage, give it a try but I wouldn't hold out much hope.

Stu,

Not alot maybe 200-300ml at most. I'll give them a call and see what they say. I was going to do an oil change at 25k so I guess it's no biggie as I'll be hitting that soon.

Thanks

You'll be fine mate I should think.

If you asked for the oil for said engine and they sold you the wrong oil (oil not specified for your car by VAG) i would demand an oil and filter change as it was there f*ck up not yours, then again do you really want them near your car any more if they cant even supply you with the right oil

Nice idea Mike but lets put this into a scenario -

You bowl into said dealers announcing 'right you W@nkers, you sold me the wrong oil!!'

They reply 'erm no we didn't sir'

So then where do you go from here?? You would find it difficult to prove what you asked for unless the guy who sold it to you reached for the sky and that'd be highly unlikely.

You 'may' be able to get something but it's really only goodwill.

Check the receipt for a name/number for the oil you were given?

It doesn't matter - how could you prove that you didn't ask for the wrong oil or that you asked for the oil for a PD engine?

This is where they cope out, they just used "Oil top up" with no numbers. Unless one of the techie's comes back saying that it will do damage I'll just leave it until the oil change that I was going to do at 25k anyway.

Yeah, fair enough.

I'd make sure you go to the guy who actually gave it to you and shout lots.

My Mothers old car kept having a warning light on almost routinely every month for the last year of her warrantee, each time she took it to Peugeot and they played with it and said "try it now" and that it's a small tweak. The day her warrantee expired it came on again and she went down there, suddenly its a major problem and will be

With the small amount you have topped up with it will be fine, however you do not want to put any more in for sure.

Cheers

Guy.

VAG state you can use upto a litre of non PD oil for top up.

You'll be fine Mike.
